Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

I Miss My Little Snugglebug

I didn’t think so when he was a newborn, but it was great when Ben loved to snuggle with me all the time. For the first few months of his life, all he wanted to do was be cuddled up against Mommy. I enjoyed it, but at the same time I wanted some freedom! And it made me less affectionate towards my husband, too — after having a baby snuggled all over me all day, the last thing I wanted was another person snuggled all over me. I needed some me space, dang it!

Well, now Ben is older and for several months now, the snugglebug has been gone. He still …

No Crawling For This Baby

At eight months old, Ben should be crawling now — or at least getting close. That’s what the developmental milestones say, anyways. The first step is supposedly being able to sit on their own without support, something Ben’s mastering more and more every day, although he still usually will topple over after a few minutes. But crawling? Not even close.

No, Ben enjoys his own methods of getting around. Since he was about two months old, he learned to low crawl like a Marine: pulling himself along on his belly with his arms. When he was younger, he didn’t get very far, but now he zooms around all over the place. …

Gunny Claus? No problem.

When I took Ben to get pictures taken with Santa Claus, he was not a fan. So I was a little bit nervous about our battalion Christmas party this past weekend. For one thing, it was way past his bedtime, so I worried he would be fussy the entire time, but there was also the issue of Santa’s helper coming to visit: Gunny Claus!

Gunny Claus serves in the First Reindeer Division of the Marine Corps, and visits children who are separated from their parents at Christmastime to bring some of that Christmas magic to them during the holidays. And, of course, he brings toys as well!

We lined …

Ben’s New Nighttime Torture

Ben has decided that Mommy has had enough restful nights, apparently. His new favorite thing in the world: waking Mommy up at all hours of the night.

It started out pretty simple: he was waking up around 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning. He’d take a bottle, and then go back to sleep. It was annoying, but tolerable. My mom pointed out that it had become a habit, and to stop getting up with him when he woke up in the morning. I did, and while he still wakes up around 5:00, he cries for a bit and then puts himself back to bed. Luckily, he’ll then sleep until around 8:00 …

That Scary, Scary Santa Claus

It’s Ben’s first Christmas season, so what does that mean? It means that I, of course, will be going all out and making sure that we take part in every single Christmas tradition possible. Well, maybe not every tradition, but most of them. One of the things that I was most excited about was the picture with Santa!

I found out that the Jacksonville Mall has an option online where you can buy your package in advance and get a Fast Pass, letting you go into a VIP line so you don’t have to wait as long. Well, seeing as how I have a baby, of course that was a must. …

Pennies From Heaven

I recently had a day off from work. I took my older
two children to school and then Timothy and I went to the grocery store. I was
happy to see that the parking lot was not crowded; I wanted to get in and back
out quickly because it had been raining on and off the whole morning. Lucky for us, by the time we pulled into the parking space it had stopped raining.

When I stepped out of the car I felt something under my feet. When I looked down I was standing in a pile of pennies. Evidently someone had dropped these pennies from their car and didn’t want to bother …
