We’ve got a major quandary on our hands, and I’m looking to you, fellow Cuddlebugs readers, for some help. Emily’s birthday is September 3rd, and the cutoff date for starting kindergarten in Onslow County is August 31st. She misses the cutoff date by three stinking days.
There is a process you can go through so that she could start kindergarten right before she turns five instead of waiting until she’s almost six. But it seems like a fairly involved process. So my question is, dear readers, is it worth it to try and get her to start earlier versus later?
Pros to starting earlier – She’s a girl. In my graduate …
One recent weekend, we took advantage of some glorious weather to go exploring. This winter has been amazing for wonderful weather. Thank you, North Carolina.
Anyway, we decided to go explore one of the parks the area has to offer. We headed to the Northeast Creek Park, located on Corbin Drive in Jacksonville. We’ve been to the playground side before (very underwhelming, some older equipment, and not fenced in), and this time we decided to check out the nature trail along the water.
I’m a sucker for anything along the water. Being near the water, be it a creek, lake, or the ocean, just makes me happy. The kids were also excited …

The kid is cute, the bapi not so much
This past week, we finally got brave and started taking away Joshua’s pacifier, or bapi as he calls it. He had previously avoided having it taken away since he didn’t have any teeth to adversely affect with its presence. We also didn’t want to put Grandma and Grandpa through the wonders of weaning a heavily-pacifier-dependent toddler. We want them to want to come back and visit. Now that he has teeth and Grandma and Grandpa have headed home, it was time. As unpleasant as weaning is, with a dentist as a father, there’s no way Joshua gets to …

Trying out his new bike
Last week, the day Grandma and Grandpa arrived in fact, Nathan celebrated his fifth birthday! To say he was excited would be quite the understatement. He is, after all, five.
The day was a pretty quiet one, starting off with cinnamon rolls with dad for breakfast and playing with Emily and Joshua most of the morning. We had Chick-fil-A for lunch (his request), followed by naptime, then off to meet Grandma and Grandpa. Their favorite restaurant is Mike’s Farm out past the airport, so we had dinner there. Then, it was home for cupcakes and presents.
He got some fun presents including more Trio …
With Chad’s parents visiting last week, we decided to do a bit of exploring. We’ve been to Wilmington on previous visits (the children’s museum there is awesome!), so this time we headed to New Bern.
Our first stop was the New Bern Firemen’s Museum. Nathan has always loved fire trucks, and he was really excited to see the trucks that they had. They had several of the first fire trucks used in New Bern, some of which dated back to the 1870s. It was impressive to see the old equipment that these firefighters worked with and the curators at the museum were also friendly and helpful. We even got a little …
Last week, we had some fabulous visitors – Grandma and Grandpa! Chad’s parents flew out for a long weekend to visit us, celebrate some birthdays, and see our new home.
The kids love to see their grandparents, but with my parents living in South America and Chad’s parents living in Utah, that just doesn’t happen as often as we’d all like. Thankfully, through the wonders of Skype and FaceTime, we do get to “see” them all fairly regularly. It’s not quite the same, though.
Chad also grew up in a very closely-knit family. Both sides of grandparents live five minutes apart from each other. The entire rest of the Reese family, aunts, …
