Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

Super Schedule?

Nora at the park

How regimented is your schedule? I was watching the super Nanny the other day and I noticed that the first thing she always makes the families do is set up a schedule. When she’s done with a family they have a set time to do arts and crafts, a set time to go outside and play, they pretty much have a set time to do everything. I know that schedules are really good for kids. Kids feel safe when they live in a predictable and structured environment. My home, however, is probably not as regimented as the Super Nanny would like. …

Healthy Snacks for My Toddler

Nora has always been a fan of fresh fruit. Especially blackberries!

As a Mom I really try my best to feed my daughter healthy foods that will give her taste buds a good start in life. I’m definitely not perfect, but I do try my hardest to give her healthy snacks and meals. Here are some of Nora’s favorites that I actually enjoy giving her!

In no particular order:

Bagel and cream cheese

Homemade hummus and carrots

Vegan banana walnut muffins my sister, Kathleen, gave me the recipe for. Nora LOVES them and started calling them “cake.” I haven’t corrected her and instead give her a muffin every …

Failure as a Stay at Home Mom

Me and Nora on one of our trips.

Okay, so maybe I’m being a little harsh on myself by saying I’m failing at being a stay at home Mom, but my baby brain sure has been affecting my ability to remember things!

Let me back up and tell you that Garrett isn’t too fond of packing. He also says he trusts me enough to pick out things that make him look good SO pretty much ever since we got married the packing has been in my hands. Usually I make a list of things to pack that are particular to the exact trip we are going on. …

2nd Time around the Block

a random picture of me Nora. I hope Nora likes her future sibling more than she liked this horse!

As I told you last week, Garrett and I are pregnant! This “we’re pregnant” thing has been a continuing debate between me and Garrett because I say it sounds weird for him to tell people, “we’re pregnant.” Since he isn’t the one who is pregnant, I think he should be saying, “Kelly’s pregnant!” He insists it is totally fine and a completely normal thing to say. Do you have any thoughts on the matter?

Anyway, let me get back to the point of this blog. I have been asked to …

“Ke-Lee!”

When I was in middle school my family and I visited my Mom’s cousin, Miriam, and her daughter, Alexandra. My siblings and I called Miriam, “Miriam” and before we knew it Alexandra started calling her mom, “Miriam.” I remember asking Miriam if she wanted us to call her, “Mom” so Alexandra would start calling her Mom, too. Miriam said that was all right and we didn’t have to do it.

Well, here I am with my own daughter and she has started calling me, “Ke-Lee.” Obviously my friends and their children don’t call me Mom. They call me Kelly so that must be where she is learning my …

Marathon Running is Still Taking Its Toll on Me

Boy was I happy to be finished!

The Marine Corps Marathon passed a long time ago. It’s a new year now (even if it is just 4 months later) and I feel like I should be a new me! The problem? The running injury I got from the marathon is only sinking its teeth in me even more.

I knew something was wrong with my feet and left ankle before the marathon but I’m stubborn and there was no way I was going to go through all of that training while Garrett was deployed and not reach my goal of running the Marine Corps Marathon. So I ran …
