Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

Hang In There! (like the kitty hanging on a branch)

Uh-oh, now what?

Uh-oh, now what?

“Can I just stay here one more day? Please?”

It had been four days since the birth of my son, and despite my husband and mother being there and the hospital staff being friendly and helpful, I was not quite ready to leave.

What if my milk didn’t come in and I couldn’t feed him? How do I hold him? What if I drop him? What if he got sick? What if he didn’t love me as much as I loved him? So many questions; some of them reasonable, others ridiculous, and I was driving myself and everyone around me insane!

Like any …

Could Nora be Allergic to Dairy? Part 1

Nora's big blow-out

Nora's big blow-out

The doctors thought perhaps Nora was allergic to dairy and recommended that I do not eat any dairy. I haven’t talked about my diet yet, so let me tell to you that I am a lacto-ovo-pesco-vegetarian. In normal words that means I eat cheese, ice cream, eggs, and seafood.

I do not drink cows milk (I drink soy milk). I do not eat meat. Was I willing to change my diet to help Nora? Yes. So I stopped eating any form of dairy.

No more ice cream, cheese or even butter for me. Boo! I stopped for a whole month and Nora’s spitting up got better, her …

How Long Are You Going to Breastfeed?

Breastfeeding Baby

Breastfeeding Baby

I’ve been thinking lately about how long moms should breastfeed and wanted to know your opinion. My friend Sarah’s daughter, Hannah, has just turned one year old and according to Sarah it’s time for Hannah to be weaned.

Why has this got me thinking, you ask? Hannah loves to breastfeed. She prefers it to eating and Sarah is having a hard time finding a milk replacement that Hannah will drink.

Breast milk obviously provides a lot of nutrients and fats Hannah needs. Hannah hates whole milk and doesn’t seem too excited about soy milk. Sarah is going to try 2% milk next, but what if that doesn’t work?

Pressure to Breastfeed-Is It Right For You And Your Baby?

Sayle and his bottle

Sayle and his bottle

When I was about 8 months pregnant, I found myself in random conversation with a woman in a ladies’ restroom.  We made minor chit-chat about my pregnancy and then she asked me “so are you going to breastfeed?” I immediately thought “wow-random and very personal question,” but I informed her that was my intent.  She went on to tell me how important it was to breastfeed and all the benefits babies get from being breastfed. It was just the typical kind of lecture any pregnant woman expects to get while in the restroom of a restaurant. Robin is the lactation consultant at the hospital and without her I doubt I …

How I Lost the “Mommy Weight”

uploadI saw a friend of mine in Wilmington recently who I hadn’t seen in months. She couldn’t believe how good I look and wanted to know how I’d lost the baby weight so quickly.

I wanted to share with you all the three things that I feel most contributed to me losing my baby weight quickly.

1. Working out during pregnancy

The days of the doctor telling you to sit on your tush during pregnancy are over. All of the new research says that working out during pregnancy is actually healthy for both Mom and baby.

I continued to work out during my pregnancy and it really helped me to maintain my health rather than back …

Breastfeeding and Bleeding

Baby Nora with her Daddy

Baby Nora with her Daddy

When my daughter was three weeks old I was still painfully breastfeeding. I knew it “shouldn’t hurt” from my research, but thought that maybe I was experiencing residual pain from prior feeding sessions. It got to the point where I’d gasp when she latched because it hurt so much.

One day, she pulled off of me and gazed up into my eyes with a semi-smile on her face. To my horror the lower half of her face was covered in blood much like a clown would paint his mouth –only Nora’s face was dripping. I could also see pockets …
