Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

Parenting News: Wakefulness Not to Blame for Higher SIDS Deaths in Boys

SUNDAY, Aug. 1 (HealthDay News) – Experts have long known that sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is more common in boys than girls, but a new study suggests that gender differences in levels of wakefulness are not to blame.

In fact, the researchers found that infant boys are more easily aroused from sleep than girls.

“Since the incidence of SIDS is increased in male infants, we had expected the male infants to be more difficult to arouse from sleep and to have fewer full arousals than the female infants,” senior author Rosemary S.C. Horne, a senior research fellow at the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, said in a news release. “In …

Isaac The Scavenger

I have noticed at daycare Isaac portrays a certain notorious member of the food chain:  the scavenger!

Just like a hyena or vulture on the nature shows, he lurks on the African savanna among the high grass…and by “savanna” I mean the baby dining room and by “high grass” I mean stuffed animals and toys, of course.

When the other babies are up in their high chairs eating their snacks, Isaac begins to stalk them based on what is on the menu. The usual fare of Puffs and Lil’ Crunchies are somewhat interesting to him, but the big winners are things he knows he cannot have yet, such as cookies, grapes, and mac n’ cheese….

Dirt is Dirt

I suppose I was ignorant to think stores kept their carpets semi-clean if at all possible.  I expect some stores, such as department stores, to have dirty carpets from heavy traffic.  I have worked in a department store before and I know I vacuumed the heck out of that carpet at night, so the carpet of the store I worked in may have been semi-dirty, but it definitely wasn’t foul!

When I go to a busy store, I bring Sayle’s stroller to keep Sayle from crawling on these dirty carpets and I absolutely refuse to let him out of it.  As of last week, I will be sure to bring Sayle’s stroller with me no matter where I’m going as I …

Trapped!

Now that Isaac is crawling… well, actually he is not technically crawling yet; he is just kind of scooching or creeping or slithering along you could say.

Regardless, this baby gets from point A to point B pretty quickly, so my mom got him a super size play-yard thing which has been a lifesaver!

Trapped in paradise?

Trapped in paradise?

On one hand I feel bad because Isaac does seem trapped in a cage, and he will stare out beseechingly with his big doe eyes, just begging for his freedom.

On the other hand, it is big so he can crawl and roll around and soon probably pull up on it.  Also this …

Trouble In Baby Alcatraz

Even though my home is now under complete baby lock down, Sayle has once again outsmarted the Warden. Baby gates, new coffee tables with rounded edges, pocket doors, and cabinet locks are not nearly enough to keep my child safe, now I am going to have to nail my furniture to the floor or wall…like they do in prison.  Read my first post: “Welcome to Baby Alcatraz”

I have this lovely little table in my hallway, it has very ornate rod iron with a perfectly stained top-one of my favorite peices of furniture I own. I keep a plant we were given as …

Sayle and the Doggie Door (Video)

This video is a prime example as to why we live on Baby Alcatraz.  Sayle has been keeping a close eye on the doggie door.  He documented the times the doggie door is usually open for business and exactly how the dogs use it.  When the opportunity presented itself, Sayle tried to make a quick break for the land of freedom, aka-the back deck.  Unfortunately, the Warden was sitting close by (with a video camera) and the dogs were on the other side telling him that door was the only thing in the house that wasn’t his.  Obviously, Sayle is taking everything in and figuring things out!

I thought I had a few years before I had to worry about him …
