He did it! He finally did it! That’s right, folks – this week Joshua, my fifteen-and-a-half-month-old finally started to walk! For those of you following along, he had actually taken his first steps a few weeks ago. And while those first steps were oh-so-cute, he hadn’t decided that walking was worth doing full time, until now.
The problem was that this new found skill only seemed to be a novelty to him. He would take a few steps, fall down, receive the appropriate praise, and crawl away. He would then repeat this process about fifteen minutes later. Some days he seemed to want to start walking, but other times the inevitable …
As I wrote previously, this week has been a week of firsts. Nathan started us off with soccer practice and preschool. Joshua didn’t want to be left behind either, so he reached a major milestone himself – his first steps!
Now, as I’ve said before, my kids are slow when it comes to gross motor development. Nathan crawled at ten and a half months and walked at sixteen months. Emily crawled at eleven months and walked at nineteen and a half months. I wish I were kidding about Emily – she really was that slow.
So I had no major expectations of Joshua doing anything anytime soon. I was pleasantly surprised …

The only thing missing was Daddy!
Celebrating the Fourth of July has always been something that I like to do. So, it was no surprise that I wanted Braylin’s first Fourth of July to be fun and exciting. I started talking about plans with everyone as soon as we made it to Florida. We all agreed that we wanted to avoid the tourist hot spots and have a more laid back celebration.
Laid back is the perfect way to describe our day. We started out with a combined family barbecue where Braylin was the only baby, so she got lots of loving. After all of our bellies …

Standing in his crib
Joshua hit another milestone this week – he learned how to pull up to standing! He had been pulling up onto his knees for a few weeks, and he had been enjoying his new found ability to get into things. Logically, the next step is to pull up to standing, but Nathan and Emily had both been so slow to make that jump that I thought we were still months away. Boy was I wrong.
The first time he did it, Joshua was in Nathan and Emily’s room playing. Nathan ran out to tell me, but by the time I got there he had …

I don't want to see any bumps or bruises on this happy face!
As I sit here typing this, I am a little jittery and can’t stop looking over my shoulder. Why, you ask? Well, after mastering the art of crawling last week, Braylin decided that wasn’t enough for her, so she started pulling up on everything she gets close to.
I knew that babies were curious, that is why we “baby proofed” our house. However, no amount of baby proofing (except perhaps rubber floors) can prepare for a clumsy baby.
I love milestones. I love seeing our baby grow and develop, BUT she has already hurt herself a …

His path of destruction
About three weeks ago now, Joshua started crawling. Those first few days, he was cautious. He didn’t get anywhere fast, and I don’t think he really understood that he could go places. He would mostly just doodle around in our family room, finding toys he had dropped or accidentally thrown.
My how things have changed. In just a few short weeks, he has quickly realized that crawling enables him to go from point A to point B whenever he wants. This means that he can go find whatever it is he wants all by himself (as long as it’s on the ground). When he’s …
