Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

Growing Girl

Abigail is growing so fast. She now walks almost all of the time, has 12 teeth, and can say what sounds some animals say.

She can tell you that a cow says moo, a dog says arf, a sheep says baa, and she thinks a duck says duck haha. She also knows a monkey says ah ah and that a bear growls. She can also tell you that an angry sheep says grrrrrr. In which she precedes to growl in a deep tone. It’s rather hilarious.

Sometimes I am just amazed at how smart she is. She knows sign language for hungry and more. When she wants a bath she pretends she is splashing. She has finally figured out …

Moms Who Over Do It

Remember when McDonalds was awesome? I have great memories associated with Happy Meals!

The world that our kids are being raised in today is so different from when we were kids. When I was a kid, soda wasn’t the devil and watching  TV was a natural thing to do in your spare time. I grew up on Fruity Pebbles and violent cartoons like Tom and Jerry and He-Man/She-Ra.  Stuff that today would be severely frowned upon by parenting experts.

I am not one of those moms that bans sugar from my child’s life or only feeds them organic foods all the time. But I’m also not the …

Where’s Emmy?

When we found out that Joshua was going to be a boy, Nathan was momentarily disappointed.  He liked Emily, and he thought having another Emily would be fun.  He even wanted to name New Baby Emily if she was a girl.  Within about ten minutes, though, he had warmed up to the idea of a little brother whom he could indoctrinate in all things boy – bike riding, camping, wrestling, soccer, you get the idea.  Not that he doesn’t do all of those things with Emily, but the thought of doing them with a brother was appealing.

Fast forward two years.  Joshua is here, and Nathan still loves having a little …

Nearly New Fish

I encountered the greatest thing the other day.  Nearly New Fish.  It is East Carolina’s premier children’s consignment event!  Best thing since sliced bread.

This consignment event is ideal for mom’s who do not have the time to shop around for that deal.  Not every thrift store or consignment shop has what you need.  Twice a year, Nearly New Fish brings together local families in need of selling their outgrown and gently used items for up to 75% profit. The result is our local Swansboro Civic Center completely packed full of clothes, toys, books, and gear, for the littlest newborns all the way to the teenage years.

The prices were out of this …

Guns and Kids

Recently the topic of guns in our house has been brought up. My first reaction is to be terrified that somehow something bad would happen and Abigail would get hurt. Then I realize that’s not probable with the right precautions.

The first mistake people make when it comes to guns with kids in the house is not educating them. By hiding it they in fact lure the child to it. What is more intriguing to a kid than something they aren’t supposed to have? What needs to be done instead is to teach them safety, how to use it, and when to use it.

Starting kids on their own smaller guns is …

One Year Old

Benjamin is going to be turning one this week. It has been a year since I had him and honestly… I can’t believe it.

One year old. It’s exciting, but at the same time, I am somewhat in shock at how quickly time has gone by. In a few days, there will be no more formula, no more bottles. It will be all sippy cups and solids. He’s going to be walking and talking soon. He’s got more teeth coming in, and is getting bigger every day. And it just feels like this day has snuck up on me somehow.

There are all these little moments that make me stop and wonder …

When An Introvert Mom Has An Extrovert Child

The latest book that I am reading is called Quiet, which focuses on the importance of people who are introverts in a world where we celebrate extroverts. I was drawn to the book because I am an introvert and even though I’ve come a long way in my thirty plus years….. I spent most of my childhood as someone who was painfully shy and quiet.

My husband is the absolute polar opposite of me. He is loud, outgoing, talkative, and always the life of the party. He loves being around people and meeting new people. He is comfortable being the center of attention.

There are a couple other people I know personally …

Picky Eater

Timothy is usually a pretty good eater. He is curious and will try just about anything. Lately this has not been the case. If he sees something on his plate that he doesn’t recognize he will say that he doesn’t like it. It doesn’t matter if he hasn’t even tried it yet. He is convinced that he doesn’t like it.

We have a rule at our house. You need to try one bite of something before you decide that you don’t like it. If you try it and don’t like it then you may have something else to eat. I started this rule with my first little guy, who is now …

Charge!

Vicious Guard Dog

I had the lovely opportunity of putting my mace to good use this past week.  Lily, Duke and I were charged by two large, mean dogs while jogging around the neighborhood.  Not cool.  Obviously, I was scared out of my mind.

Duke was our little savior, though.  He stood between us and the charging K-9’s.  Ultimately, it was clear they were after Duke.  Before any fighting broke out amongst the dogs, I finally managed to free my mace from the pocket in my jogging stroller and start squirting.  Of course, I missed both dogs, but the fact that I was able to squirt something at …

Joshua and the Haircut

Joshua’s hair, like his teeth, has been slow to grow in.  Well, most of his hair has been slow to grow in, I should say.  There was one little spot in the back that was significantly longer than the rest, almost like a self-inflicted rat tail.  It was sweet.

A few weeks ago, Chad decided that enough was enough and that it was time for his first haircut.  He immediately brought out the clippers and found his favorite length.  I immediately freaked out – my baby was getting a buzz cut?!?  I snatched away my baby and gave Chad some excellent ideas as to where he could use his clippers. And when I …
