Ashley Mozingo

Hi everyone! My name is Ashley, and I am a stay at home mom to two girls, Paislee, 3 and Keely, 1. My husband is in the Coast Guard, and is currently stationed at a Coast Guard unit on Camp Lejune. We have been married for five years now and have spent two of those years in Alaska, where Paislee was born, and two in Maine, where we had Keely. We were lucky to get stationed here in 2012, and call North Carolina "home". We were both born and raised in different cities in eastern North Carolina, and we are super excited to get to spend some time here with our girls and introduce them to some of our favorite places that we had as children. Before I met my husband, I attended East Carolina University, where I earned my Bachelors Degree in Communications. I have a love for writing, and a huge passion for being a mom, so I am thrilled to have the opportunity to write about my experiences and exciting moments of this rocky ride that we all call 'Motherhood'.

Morning Routine

Early mornings can be tough when you have little ones to get out the door! I have never been much of a morning person, but since the girls have started going to school, I’ve had to step up to the challenge.

Last year, I found myself and my oldest daughter fighting almost every morning. We fought over EVERYTHING. What she was going to wear, how she would wear her hair, what she was eating for breakfast, etc. It was exhausting, and the worst part was dropping her off at school after we had spent the last hour arguing. I hated leaving her that way, so I knew that something had to change. I made little changes over the year last year, and this year–I was well prepared!

So a few things I have done this year to make my mornings run a lot smoother include a LOT of preparation the night before. I ALWAYS pick out clothes the night before. Since both of my girls are very opinionated, every night after they get out of the bath we go to their rooms and get their pajamas on and pick out their outfit for the next day–including socks, underwear and hair bows. That way there are absolutely no questions the next morning. Paislee can just get up out of bed and go ahead and get her clothes on before she comes downstairs where Keely and I usually are.

Something else I do the night before is get all of their school stuff together. I sign papers, get folders together and pack snacks so it is all ready in the morning, one less thing for me to do! I also lay everything out so I can quickly grab it–toothbrushes, toothpaste, any meds they need, shoes, vitamins, etc. This helps a lot!

The biggest change I have made this year from last year is getting up before they do. Last year, I slept as late as I possibly could–most mornings not waking up until they did. Then I was left to get all of us ready at the same time, not getting anytime to myself. Now, I wake up at 6 a.m. every morning. I get up, and get to have a cup of coffee with no one talking to me :) . Then I get to take a shower in peace most mornings as well. Just this little bit of quiet time is SO HELPFUL in the mornings, and me being in a good mood when they wake up makes a HUGE difference in the way our mornings start!

What is your morning routine? What do you find helps get you out the door with everyone happy?
