My oldest daughter never slept in her crib. Literally, seriously, maybe twice. Being a mom of two kids, I usually have some sort of experience in a lot of things and know what to do or expect, but the crib department I do not know much about.
I had horrible first time mom syndrome when Paislee was a baby and was always worried about her. I worried that she would stop breathing in her sleep or that someone would break in and steal her in the middle of the night, and on top of that, she was breast fed, so she slept in our room for most of her first year and into her second year. When she was two, we moved and she got a big girl bed. We made a huge deal of her getting a new bed in her new room and she transitioned to her new room and new bed surprisingly quick and easy.
Keely has been pretty much the opposite. She has preferred to sleep in her crib since she was very young, and enjoys having her own space. She turned two in February, and is still currently sleeping in her crib at night. It never really crossed my mind that maybe we should get her a big girl bed until I recently started seeing other moms post on Facebook about getting their toddlers big kid beds. She has never tried to climb out of her crib at all, so it really hasn’t occurred to me that maybe she should be in a toddler bed by now.
So, is there a rule about kids and cribs? Is there a point where they are too old to be sleeping in their crib? If they are not climbing out, is there any reason for putting them in a toddler bed? Weigh in Moms, I need to know these things!
