Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

Uncle Sam Visits

One of the highlights of our recent holidays was having my younger brother Sam come visit.  He is a senior in college and needed a place to stay other than his off-campus apartment.  Since my parents are living in South America, we’re becoming the designated home away from home for the family.  So we were happy to have him come.  Plus, he’s fun, and Nathan, Emily, and Joshua like playing with him.

He spent a few days up in Maryland and Virginia visiting other family the week before Christmas and then came back late on Christmas Eve.  On Christmas morning, the kids were really excited that Santa had filled a stocking for Uncle Sam and had even brought him a present.

Uncle Sam slept a lot while he was here – he is a college student after all.  And he’s an engineering major in his last year.  Just listening to it all gave me not-entirely pleasant flashbacks to my college years and made me tired.  Thankfully, we have a guest room, and the kids did their best to let him catch up on sleep.

We also wanted to make him some good home-cooked meals during his visit.  We also all went to Cook Out for dinner one night too which is a favorite from back home in Raleigh.  Who doesn’t love their milkshakes?  We ate better that week than we do some months.

All in all, it was a great week with Uncle Sam.  It was good to see my brother again, and kids really did have fun with him.  It was also nice to have another adult around so that I could sneak out and go grocery shopping childless during naptime.  Just typing that sentence makes me happy.  We were glad to have some family for Christmas, and we’ll be happy to have him back next year!

Did you have any family visit for the holidays?  Was your visit a good one?
