Happy New Year!
With a new year, come New Year’s Resolutions! It can be a great time to look over the past year, evaluate what went well and what didn’t, and look to make improvements for the upcoming year.
This past year was an amazingly busy one around the Reese household, what with buying our first home, moving, visiting family, getting settled in our home, church responsibilities, and those three little monkeys running around. This past year just makes me tired thinking about it. But, we also accomplished a lot, and I’m looking forward to another productive year.
Which leads perfectly into my first resolution for 2012 – better time management. While a lot did get done this year, I also wasted an amazing amount of time. If I spent half the time sewing that I did looking at sewing blogs and quilts in my Google Reader, I could have nearly doubled my sewing production. Add Facebook, Pinterest, the New York Times, and overly frequent email checks (all enabled by my smartphone – love it and hate it), and that’s a lot of time. And a lot of time doing things that haven’t necessarily enriched my life all that much. Except Pinterest. I love Pinterest.
So, this year, I plan to spend less time doing those things that don’t add much of significance to my life and to spend more time doing those things that do. I love reading – when I was younger, the worst punishment my mom could give me would be to take away my book for a day. Since Santa brought me a Kindle Fire, I now even have the means to indulge in this love more readily.
I also love to sew. I love the process of taking a stack of lovely fabric and turning it into an even lovelier finished project. I have a number of projects that I’d like to tackle this year. I also need to play more with my kids. Nathan will be off to kindergarten next year, and I won’t be able to get this time back.
So, it’s time for me to use my time more wisely. I need to spend my time on things of more lasting worth than Facebook. Here’s to more reading, sewing, and playing – now that sounds like the stuff of which memories are made.
What are your New Year’s resolutions? Are you excited about them?
