No Crawling For This Baby
At eight months old, Ben should be crawling now — or at least getting close. That’s what the developmental milestones say, anyways. The first step is supposedly being able to sit on their own without support, something Ben’s mastering more and more every day, although he still usually will topple over after a few minutes. But crawling? Not even close.
No, Ben enjoys his own methods of getting around. Since he was about two months old, he learned to low crawl like a Marine: pulling himself along on his belly with his arms. When he was younger, he didn’t get very far, but now he zooms around all over the place. If I leave the room, sometimes he’ll try to follow me. If he sees something he wants to play with, he’ll low crawl his way over to it.
He also enjoys a rudimentary bear crawl: pushing himself up on his hands and feet. Pushing himself onto his hands and knees? Not so much. He does occasionally, and will rock back and forth for a second, but he doesn’t seem to show the slightest interest in crawling. I’m really wondering if he’s going to skip it altogether and go straight to standing and walking.
Ben absolutely loves to stand, and he loves it when you let him “walk.” He likes to scoot around on the floor, but just doesn’t seem interested in learning to crawl. The important thing, supposedly, is that he’s mobile — which he is. So I guess there’s no need to worry. And maybe, just maybe, this will give Mommy a few more months of sanity. I haven’t really started baby proofing the house too much, because he doesn’t generally wander outside of where I can see him. With no crawling, I can keep putting that off hopefully for a little while longer!
Did your child skip crawling altogether? If so, at what age did they start walking?
