Ashley Mozingo

Hi everyone! My name is Ashley, and I am a stay at home mom to two girls, Paislee, 3 and Keely, 1. My husband is in the Coast Guard, and is currently stationed at a Coast Guard unit on Camp Lejune. We have been married for five years now and have spent two of those years in Alaska, where Paislee was born, and two in Maine, where we had Keely. We were lucky to get stationed here in 2012, and call North Carolina "home". We were both born and raised in different cities in eastern North Carolina, and we are super excited to get to spend some time here with our girls and introduce them to some of our favorite places that we had as children. Before I met my husband, I attended East Carolina University, where I earned my Bachelors Degree in Communications. I have a love for writing, and a huge passion for being a mom, so I am thrilled to have the opportunity to write about my experiences and exciting moments of this rocky ride that we all call 'Motherhood'.

Gunny Claus? No problem.

When I took Ben to get pictures taken with Santa Claus, he was not a fan. So I was a little bit nervous about our battalion Christmas party this past weekend. For one thing, it was way past his bedtime, so I worried he would be fussy the entire time, but there was also the issue of Santa’s helper coming to visit: Gunny Claus!

Gunny Claus serves in the First Reindeer Division of the Marine Corps, and visits children who are separated from their parents at Christmastime to bring some of that Christmas magic to them during the holidays. And, of course, he brings toys as well!

We lined up to get a picture taken with Gunny Claus, and unlike when Ben first laid eyes on Santa, when he saw Gunny Claus for the first time, he had absolutely no reaction. No tears were shed whatsoever. I have to say, I was a little surprised. I had been gearing myself up for the waterworks.

When the time came to drop Ben in Gunny Claus’ lap to get the picture taken, he still remained surprisingly dry-eyed. We got the pictures, Gunny Claus gave us a Christmas tree ornament and a Webkins reindeer, and we were all done! It was surprisingly pain-free this time around. There was also a big table of toys that each child could help themselves to, but we didn’t take anything. None of the toys were really for babies, and I didn’t want to take something just to take it.

I’m still not sure why Ben was OK with Gunny Claus, but not with Santa. It’s a mystery to me, although I’m definitely not complaining. I certainly wasn’t looking forward to a repeat of the Santa Claus terror!
