Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

How Many Presents Does a Toddler Need?

I love, love, love this season! I am proud to say that I am halfway done with my Christmas shopping. I start shopping around October and usually I’m done well before Christmas. The only thing that I’m doing different this year is I’m not going to wait till the last minute to wrap everything. I always wait till it’s too close to Christmas because I have these visions of me happily wrapping presents late at night, watching Christmas movies, drinking hot cocoa while everyone in the house is asleep.

Well, that never happens. Every year, it turns into a chore because there are just too many to wrap in a night so instead of having fun, I become overwhelmed. So now I’ve started wrapping little by little and my new system is working beautifully.

The only thing is that I’ve discovered is now I have way more presents for Serophina than I do for Saioa. At five years old, Serophina is SO looking forward to Christmas and presents. But Saioa doesn’t really know what’s going on. Plus, she’s still young enough that it’ll take her an hour just to open one present and she wouldn’t care if she got 3 presents or 20.

I’ve found it challenging to even out the number of presents they both get, especially because we already have toys galore that are hand-me-downs from Serophina. So, what I’ve done is donated a lot of our old toys to Partnership for Children in Carteret County. That way I can make room for the new toys that they are getting for Christmas.

Also, when I’m out shopping, if Saioa is drawn to a particular toy, I’ll just get it and poof! There’s a Christmas present for her! I love this age where I can shop for her Christmas presents with her and wrap it up for later and she’s none the wiser.
