Scary Monsters!
“I scared! Help, Mommy! I scared of scary monsters! Mommyyyyyyyyy!”
This is what I have been waking up to lately, usually soon after I put my toddler down for bed and occasionally in the middle of the night as well. I try to wait it out in hopes he might go back to sleep on his own, but no such luck, so I trudge into his room, cranky and bleary-eyed to reassure him that there are no scary monsters, which usually entails a mommy snuggle and maybe a song.
Sweet soft memories with my boy, but it’s doing a number on my sleep! I need to figure this out…
What scary monsters? Where? I know for certain that I have not read or watched anything with Isaac dealing with any variety of monster, especially not the scary kind. I guess technically Ernie, Cookie and that little punk Elmo are considered monsters, but the old gang from Sesame Street are hardly the nightmare-inducing type, more the silly furry friendly type, right?
After cross-examining friends and family members with no success, the thought occurred to me that maybe this is something he picked up in preschool. Aha! But why in the world would a teacher of impressionable 2-year-olds be dealing with spooky monsters? Well, what happened was they apparently read a very G-rated and pretty silly story about a child who is scared of monsters in his bedroom, but in the end realizes there are non and cheerfully goes to sleep. Great idea in theory and happy ending, but not quite the reality in the Moore household, not even close! The teachers promised to lay off the monsters, even the nice ones until Isaac settles down, which both Isaac and I were thankful for. However, every night we still have to make sure there are no scary monsters under the bed or hiding in the closet, waiting to pounce once I leave the room, and it’s quite a thorough and time-consuming process. I’m all for a big imagination but this is not what I had in mind (:
Have you had any run-ins with scary monsters, Halloween or otherwise?
