Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

Our week of firsts – Emily

Not wanting to be left out of all the fun (read here for Nathan’s recent firsts and read here for Joshua’s first), Emily had a recent first. Hers happened while we were out in Utah visiting Chad’s family, but we’ll still count it here.

Emily had never had her hair cut. Unlike boys’ hair which needs that first haircut much earlier, girls can go a lot longer before their first haircuts. Fellow blogger Kelly’s daughter Nora just had her first haircut.

Emily’s hair is so fine and thin that I was nervous about cutting it myself. It has also grown so slowly that it just hasn’t needed a cut until recently. It was finally starting to look a little shaggy and uneven in the back, and we were having family pictures while we were in Utah.

So, the morning before pictures, Emily and I headed over to Chad’s cousin Brooke’s house for the inaugural haircut. Emily decided that I should go first, so she played while I got my trim. Then, it was her turn. At first, she was nervous, but then I handed over my iPhone so that she could watch one of her favorite shows. After that, we could have buzzed her whole head off and she wouldn’t have cared.

Brooke took a few inches off to even out the back. Emily’s hair is so fine and thin that it was almost pathetic how little hair was actually cut. I had a hard time finding enough for the baby box.

The end result is much better, though. She actually looks like she has more hair now that it’s all closer to one length. And Emily got to join (or start) our recent spate of firsts. Go Emily!

How old was your little one when they had their first haircut? How did they handle it?
