So there was this squirrel…
A rather super squirrel, actually.
This particular squirrel decided one day that he was going to go down in history as the first flying squirrel (who wasn’t actually a real flying squirrel, of course, he was an Eastern Gray Squirrel, to be exact).
Background info: My mom LOVES birds and DESPISES squirrels, for no other reason than they always find a way to steal the birdseed.
Grammie versus the sneaky squirrels has always been an epic battle, and Isaac enjoys the show, as well as learning to refer to these small gray animals as “no no squirrels” as that is what my mom is constantly yelling at them (:
Our crafty Grammie finally had found a squirrel-proof bird-feeder, so she thought…that poor woman had gone through quite a few different types of feeders on her quest to foil those birdseed-stealing squirrels.
Isaac watched with interest as she attached this new feeder to the outside of the bay window, right at eye level for optimum grandson bird-watching, which he appreciated.
Within minutes there were all sorts of feathered friends at the window: chickadees, wrens, sparrows, finches, cardinals, and even a big blue jay! Issac and Grammie were in heaven!
And here comes the local squirrel gang ready to score some seed, and we watched and laughed as one by one they tried and failed to reach the new bird-feeder. Success!
But then, all of a sudden, this really stubborn/crazy one races across the yard at top speed, and using a patio chair as a springboard, literally “flies” at the bird-feeder, claws outstretched, tail straight out.
It was amazing! Yes I know squirrels are very acrobatic in general, but this one took the cake. Isaac was watching all this go down with his mouth hanging open, all the lovely birds forgotten. The fact that my toddler stood still and was silent for more than 5 seconds was just as impressive as the squirrel’s feat of daring in my opinion…
Of course Super Squirrel totally missed the feeder, hit the screen and ran up onto the roof to sulk, but he definitely got an A for effort and entertainment.
