Cassy Fiano

Hi everyone! My name is Cassy Fiano. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I met when we were twelve, at a birthday party where he fell on the pool deck and broke one of his front teeth. I worked in several different fields until I got married. My husband and I knew that we wanted to have a family and that when we did, I would be a stay-at-home mommy. Last July, we found out I was pregnant, and on the day of my first doctor’s appointment, he deployed to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during my pregnancy, I ended up with preeclampsia. Luckily, my husband returned the morning of my scheduled induction, so the day he came home from Afghanistan was the day we went to the hospital. 16 hours and a c-section later, we had our beautiful little boy, Benjamin. Being a parent has changed my life. I’ve learned to be more patient; that it’s possible to operate on two hours of sleep, and I’ve also learned that I never really knew what stress was until I experienced a baby crying inconsolably for four hours straight. I’ve learned that looking at my son sleeping in my arms can move me to tears, that I never really loved anyone the way I love my him, and that all of the hard times can be completely wiped away with one little smile. The last four months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with you!

Sand Crabs Are By Far The Best Toys At The Beach-Video Post

Little Sand Crab

Growing up in Virginia Beach, I have fond memories of going to the beach every weekend with my parents and little sister. My parents would load the cooler down with drinks and snacks, slather us up with that colored Zinc stuff so we were covered in hot pink, hot green, hot yellow, and if we were REALLY lucky, hot purple, sun block (hey, we thought we were cool and it worked, let me know if you remember that stuff), and let us play to our heart’s content on that beach!

My absolute favorite thing to do at the beach was to dig for sand crabs. My dad would stand at the edge of the surf and toss tons of wet sand towards the shore so we could pick the sand crabs out of the piles. Then we’d stick them in a bucket and carry them around for the rest of the day. We’d compare who had the biggest sand crab, the littlest sand crab, and fastest sand crab. Big time for the kids, not so much for the sand crabs, although my sister and I did try to put them back in the water before they started getting too fried from being in our buckets for too long.

We introduced Sayle to sand crabs this year; we tried to do it last year, but eating sand and sea shells were far more entertaining than crabs. But this year, this year is the year of the sand crab and Sayle simply cannot get enough of them! My husband and I sit at the edge of the surf and stuff our hands way down in the sand as a wave passes by in attempts to grab a crab for Sayle. He holds the grab and laughs in delight as the crab scurries across the palm of his hand. We have to be careful that he doesn’t get too excited and squeeze the poor grab too tight, but he is pretty good with gentle hands for the crabs.

As fun as it may seem, it is not nice to throw wet sand in Mommy's hair

We were at the beach a few weekends ago and Sayle’s amusement with the sand crabs even had people who were just passing by trying to catch some for him just to get him to laugh! One man even told us that watching Sayle enjoy the beach, and all it had to offer, just by itself, made his day.

That comment made me smile as that’s how I remember my early beach days, it really is the simple things.

Anyways, here is a video of Sayle and his sand crab. I apologize for the wind on the video, but we obviously are at the beach!!!

What is your child’s favorite activity at the beach?

    Thanks for sharing this video!

I was searching for Virginia beach sand crabs for a while to show my kids as we used to go there every summer when we were kids too. My fondest memories were digging for crabs, fishing off of the pier and eating pizza at that pizza place that I think was on 32nd.

Going back this summer for the first time in 20 Years!
