Rascal Flatts, Counting Crows, and Sheryl Crow-You Don’t Exist According To My Two Year Old!-Video Post
While we were stopped at a stoplight on our way to school one morning, I was flipping through channels on XM radio. Being a huge 90’s music fan, I flipped it to either Lithium or 90’s at 9. The old school All Star song by Smash Mouth was on, and I started singing along. Sayle, in the backseat, exclaimed, “SHREK!”
Noooooo??! Did my little man just bust out Shrek because he knew this song was on the movie?? Hm, maybe a coincidence? I grabbed my IPOD (while safely driving of course) and put on Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows to test my little music genius’ knowledge and sure enough, again he exclaimed, “SHREK!”
I was very impressed for several reasons. One, being that it’s not like he’s watched Shrek that many times and for two, he knew the songs out of context. We were sitting in my car with no sign of Shrek whatsoever. He recognized the songs on their own and in their entirety rather than just the edit for the movie. I get that the kids recognize the movie characters, but the music?? Come on! Not to mention, that thanks to these movies, he’s getting a fabulous education on 90’s music, which makes me very happy.
I told my husband how smart our little Sayle was that night and he put Sayle to the ultimate test, he put on Halleluja, which also makes an appearance in Shrek. Without fail-Sayle nailed it immediately. Pfft, who doesn’t know that Halleluja is on Shrek, even a two year old knows!
So every morning from that point on, we get in the car and Sayle demands to hear Shrek on his ride to school; I don’t hear; “Momma, Smash Mouth” or “Momma, Counting Crows”-two of the best bands from the 90’s ever-no, they don’t exist. Only “Momma, Shrek”, and Shrek sings their songs too, in case you didn’t know that.
Last weekend, we decided to run another test on our little “name that movie” genius by downloading the Cars soundtrack. Sorry, Cheryl Crow and Rascal Flatts, you don’t exist either. Actually, Cars sings one of your songs and Lightning McQueen sings the other.
So here is the video of Sayle playing name that movie (or that artist who doesn’t exist according to a two year old.) I find his thought process not only adorable, but amusing! He also attributes, “You’ve Got A Friend In Me,” to Woody from Toy Story, not Randy Newman. I don’t even know who Randy Newman is, but apparently he wrote and sang a fantastic song for Woody to take all the credit for!
The video is a tad long as we couldn’t get the songs to play right away, thank you I-Tunes, but if you watch Sayle’s expressions you clearly note that he is currently a bigger Lightning McQueen fan than a Shrek fan.
Can your child pick out songs from movies? What artists don’t “exist” in your house? I can’t believe Sayle booted Counting Crows, hopefully he will eventually love Round Here, Mr. Jones, and Long December!!

That was too cute!
Love it! What a smart boy!
Thanks guys! It amazes me to see exactly what he picks up on!! Hopefully he will eventually acquire a taste for Counting Crows because really, who doesn’t like Round Here????
