The Adoption and Abandonment of Stuffed Animals
Ever since Serophina was a baby she has had a very strong love for stuffed animals. She is drawn to them and feels connected to them and once she makes eye contact with that special one, it’s like love at first sight.
Me, being the first-time-mom pushover that I was at the time, practically bought every stuffed animal that she laid hands on. I couldn’t resist the way her little face would light up and the way she’d hug it and kiss it and walk around with it, looking at it so lovingly. It’s an understatement to say that we have a collection of stuffed bears, monkeys, turtles, tigers, lemurs, otters and anything else you could think of.
At almost five years old, she still loves stuffed animals. The only thing is that now her love only lasts until the next one happens to come along. Last year, Kevin got her a stuffed gorilla for Valentines Day. It was instantly her absolute favorite thing in the world. She carried it around with her everywhere and had to have it in bed with her every night. She just couldn’t live without it. Until we went to the aquarium and she spotted a stuffed dolphin and it was love at first sight all over again. I felt sad for the poor gorilla because I knew it was about to end badly for the poor thing.
She abandoned the dolphin a couple weeks later for something else, and that’s been the typical adoption cycle for stuffed animals in her life.
A very good friend of ours made a sock monkey for her one time. It was the sweetest gesture and she especially made a zebra because Serophina had requested it. Serophina once again adopted it as her very own and then abandoned it later for a bear that she had found in Saioa’s toy bin.
I can’t help but feel sorry for all those stuffed animals. All I can hope is that they can find a loving, adoptive family at our next garage sale.
