TLC and Tiaras
I remember when I was growing up, the two channels that we watched were PBS and TLC. TLC used to stand for The Learning Channel. I’m not sure what it stands for these days, but they should just change the name to reality television because that is all they ever show.
So, if you want to “learn” about a family having a wild amount of children, a man with multiple wives, or tiny beauty pageant contestants, TLC is the channel for you!
While many of their shows baffle me, the one that closely relates to myself and this blog is Toddlers and Tiaras. This show literally blows my mind. It is like a train wreck, you don’t want to look, but you have to know what is going on.
I was in a few pageants when I was younger (because my friends were participating and I begged my parents to let me). Ryan knew this, so before we even found out that we were having a girl, he let me know exactly where he stood on the topic of beauty pageants. This is something we completely agree on, Braylin will not be in pageants. I know that I just said that I was in pageants, so why have we made this decision?
Beauty pageants are absolutely nothing like they were when I was younger. Spray tans, fake teeth, and thousand dollar dresses are not what I call a good time for little girls. In my opinion, Toddlers and Tiaras has given pageants a bad rap. I mean, giving your toddler red bull for them to be “perky” on stage is ridiculous.
I know that not all pageants are “high glitz,” but we have chosen to avoid them anyway.
What is your take? Do you put your toddlers in pageants? Do you think it is about the child or the parent?
