Our mobile little guy
About three weeks ago now, Joshua started crawling. Those first few days, he was cautious. He didn’t get anywhere fast, and I don’t think he really understood that he could go places. He would mostly just doodle around in our family room, finding toys he had dropped or accidentally thrown.
My how things have changed. In just a few short weeks, he has quickly realized that crawling enables him to go from point A to point B whenever he wants. This means that he can go find whatever it is he wants all by himself (as long as it’s on the ground). When he’s hungry, he heads to the kitchen to find the Cheerios he dropped during his last meal. I’m starting to think that he’s dropping them on purpose. When he wants me, he can come find me instead of sitting in the middle of the floor crying. It’s awesome.
This newfound freedom also means, however, that he can get into things. He empties our movies out of their shelves at any given opportunity. He can find and play with Nathan and Emily’s toys, much to their chagrin. We’re all having to relearn picking everything up that we don’t want eaten or chewed on. He can also make big messes with his new favorite toy, the bathroom wastebasket. We’re adopting a closed-door policy for our bathrooms to minimize his exposure to this fun new toy.
All in all, though, I’m happy that he’s crawling these days. He’s a lot happier now that he can get around. Boredom isn’t as much of a problem, particularly since he learned how to get out the toy boxes. He can also play with his big brother and sister much better now that he can find them.
How did you feel when your little one mastered crawling? Was it a positive or a negative development for you?
