What Am I Thinking?
Do any of you ever have crazy thoughts that go through your head? I do, quite frequently. These irrational fears started when I was pregnant and just seem to get worse as Braylin gets older and can do more things.
One time, Ryan asked me if I was afraid of dropping Braylin. I unloaded on him about all the things I am afraid of (half of which make zero sense). I will give you a few examples… try not to make fun of me.
I am afraid that a spider is going to bite her while she is asleep in her crib. I HATE spiders, just the thought of them makes my skin crawl and I fear that one is going to bite her and I will not notice the bite. Yep. I am just that weird. It gets better.
I picture myself stumbling over my own feet and falling while I am carrying her. This generally happens while I am on the sidewalk or some other hard surface.
Don’t even get me started on SIDS.
You name it, I fear it. Completely irrational and completely weird…
Lately, it has just been Braylin and I at our house and my fears have expanded. I have started to worry about myself. For instance, I think sometimes about something falling on me and knocking me unconscious while I am giving Braylin a bath. I also have mapped out plans for disasters like fires or tornadoes.
I know I can’t be the only person that has irrational or far-fetched fears. What are some of yours?

Dusti-You are so not alone! Kelly and I have had this discussion several times!! I think it just comes with the territory of being a mom!
I was worried about SIDS, I used to jump up in the middle of the night and hover over Sayle. To this day, I still turn the baby monitor on loud to make sure I can hear him breathing.
I’ve had thoughts when driving over the Emerald Isle bridge or Atlantic Beach bridge, what if we had a wreck and I couldn’t get Sayle out of the car seat. I’ve worried about planes crashing into Sayle’s school-yeah, I’m a complete nut.
Kelly has gone as far as to problem solve what she would do so she could be prepared in an emergency….
Yeah-like I said-you’re not alone.
As for spiders-I’ve never worried about them and I’m definitely not scared of them. I’m the girl that picks them up and put them outside. I initially typed out a long response on the spiders, but it may scare you more than help you. I know plenty about spiders as I used to work in a residential wilderness program, so if you want to know, I will be glad to ease that stress and tell you the time you need to worry.
Good to hear, Brooke! Now I don’t feel quite so insane!
I hadn’t even thought about bridges, oh. my. goodness!
I feel like I would love to hear some of your knowledge about spiders or whatever it is that I need to worry about. I can tell you that I have a “swamp” in my backyard and I get monster spiders in my house (I think they are wolf spiders from what I can find on Google).
Thank you in advance for any info you share!
Dusti,
Brooke is totally right. Worrying about the MOST random things is in the mom territory. Welcome to the club! You are totally normal
.
Some of my biggest fears involve plane crashes or car crashes and Brooke’s right about me again there… I think of the worst case scenario and then brainstorm the best way to preserve Nora’s life. I will even run through taking my seatbelt off, taking Nora’s seatbelt off, holdling her while the car fills with water (if we happen to go off a bridge into the water and we’re still alive), opening the door once the car has filled with water and swimming her out. I’ve even run through the ABCs of CPR (you know, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) once we’re to shore. Pretty funny that a two minute car ride over a bridge can result in all of that planning and thinking as well as my heart racing due to a minor heart attack lol. I think your hubby is deployed too, right? That always adds to my stress level. I’m sure it does to yours too. I’m going to email you a website I use to help me with my stress level. I hope it will help yours too!
Kelly
Kelly,
I replied to your e-mail before I read this, so you will see that you have me figured out pretty well!
I had a friend that used to roll down her window EVERY time she went over a bridge (rain or shine) because she thought it would be easier to escape if she were to fly off of it. Same principle as you planning for yourself and Nora.
Another crazy story… I will start by saying I LOVE dogs and I have never been afraid of them. Well, I was out for a walk with Braylin and our dog when a big (scary looking) dog came out of nowhere, charging toward us. In the two seconds that it took him to get to Layla (our dog), I envisioned the dog mutilating Layla, myself and Braylin, had a mini heart attack, and screamed like a little girl. Luckily, we all made it out safe, but I couldn’t feel my legs to finish the walk!
Oh, the wild imaginations our sweet babies give us!
[...] Our house backs up into a very thick little forest, so we constantly have critters in our yard like a red belly water snake, several black snakes that come back every year, deer, possums, tons of crazy insects, which attracts a plethora of spiders! (Hear that, Dusti! SPIDERS!) [...]
