Maeve’s Nap-Time Scare
Recently I had a major scare. I put Michael and Maeve down for a nap as I do everyday. They were both still awake but I gave them the opportunity to put themselves to sleep. This actually gets them to sleep faster. Our house is small and I can hear everything through the walls, so if one of them is still awake I know about it.
On this particular afternoon, Michael seemed extra playful. I still designated nap-time to continue with our daily routine, but knew he didn’t want to sleep. Regardless, I left the room and organized the living room while the kids giggled at one another. I then hopped in the shower as I thought about the kids. For some reason, I knew something would go wrong.
As I dried off, I heard Maeve squeal as she laughed at Michael. I heard bangs and thuds like I’ve never heard from their room before. Michael was up to something. Since I heard Maeve’s voice, which gave me reassurance that she was alright, I gave them a few more minutes until I would interrupt their fun. The time passed with more thuds and bangs, so I cracked the door open and was met with Michael’s eyes. He was on the rocking chair that’s between his bunk beds and the crib…. but, something was unusual. His bed was empty. I scanned the room to Maeve’s crib and everything, including fifteen stuffed animals, two large pillows, one comforter, and all his books, were in Maeve’s crib ON TOP OF HER!
I gasped and stormed into the room to the crib. As I unburied Maeve, my heart was racing. I uncovered her and was met with a big smile. Maeve was the farthest thing from rattled despite the number of objects completely surrounding her.
By my reaction, Michael knew what he did was not safe. He now knows to NEVER put anything into Maeve’s crib ever again.
Does your toddler share a room with your infant? How do you keep them both safe and out of trouble?

Sarah,
That’s so scary! I’m so glad Maeve is okay!
Nathan did that to Emily too. He thought he was being helpful because she was sad. We’re fortunate that we had enough room to be able to split them up. We even put an infant lock on the baby’s door to keep big brother (and now big sister) out. Good luck with Michael and Maeve!
