Oatmeal in the Bottle
While I was pregnant with Saioa, I remember reading about a study that linked obesity to having oatmeal too early in life. Something about how when babies get oatmeal or rice cereal in their bottle, they are unable to learn when they are truly full, and this stays with them through adulthood.
Serophina and Saioa never had oatmeal in their bottles, only because I just didn’t feel it was necessary. I wasn’t anxious to get them sleeping through the night, especially if their little bodies weren’t ready for it. Many parents start their babies on oatmeal for just that reason…to get their babies sleeping through the night. But we shouldn’t rush that process before their ready. Until a certain age, it’s natural for babies to wake up at night to eat.
My mother in law put oatmeal in her babies’ bottles and her mother probably did it to her. I think it was just one of those trends for that generation that seemed like a good idea at that time, but now we know it wasn’t.
I’m sure if they knew back then that they might be putting their children at risk for having obesity problems in adulthood, they wouldn’t have done it.
What do you think?
