Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

Deployment Stories Will Break Your Heart, Part 3

Nora reading Go, Dog. Go!

The other day I sat Nora down in front of the TV so Daddy could read a story to her. In this video of Garrett there is a blank screen for a few seconds until Garrett sits down on the chair in front of the camera. The second Garrett sat down Nora said, “Daddy!”

My heart leapt. I am overjoyed that Nora is recognizing her Daddy. One of my biggest fears this deployment is that she would forget who he is in the 8 months he is away. But she saw him and she knew who he was and she was sitting there pointing at him and calling out his name!

Garrett then pulls out the book Go, Dog. Go! and explains how this was one of his favorite books when he was a kid. Nora promptly got off the chair and ran away. Now Nora has NEVER run away from Garrett before. She will sometimes climb off of the couch/chair/my lap and play nearby the TV while Garrett reads to her. She has never actually left the room while Garrett was reading to her.

I sat there shocked.

As I stood up to go and get Nora she came running down the hallway back towards the living room. She had the biggest smile on her face and was running as fast as her little legs could carry her. In her arms she held her copy of Go, Dog. Go!

I don’t know if I have ever been more proud than I was in that second. She had gone to her bookshelf and from all of her books found the exact same book that Garrett was reading. She was bringing it back as fast as she could so she could read with him. She then climbed back up onto the chair and sat there happily flipping the pages of the book while Garrett read.

Ugh. Talk about a heart breaker! My Nora is good at that. I can’t wait for Garrett to be home to read to her in person!

Does your child have a favorite book? What is it?

I’m sure Garrett is full of love and pride for Nora at how well she was connecting with him during story time. It’s so sweet how they can share a moment like that.

You’re so right Heather, Garrett loves to hear these stories! I’m so glad Nora seems to be remembering him well.

    Thanks for commenting!
