Joshua Moves Out
Joshua has been sleeping in our room since he came home from the hospital. When we had Nathan, Chad was in his last semester of school and we knew we’d be moving from Boston in about six months, so we didn’t buy a lot of baby furniture. It seemed silly to buy something to turn around and pay to move it six months later. So instead of getting a bassinet or a real crib, we bought a Pack ‘N Play with a bassinet top and called it good.
All of our kids have slept in our room for the first few months. It makes middle of the night nursing and soothing to sleep so much simpler, and it’s nice to have them so close for the first little while. Additionally, it buys us some extra time to transition older siblings out of the big crib and into big beds.
After awhile, though, sharing a room gets old. Having to sneak in to brush your teeth during morning naps, only being able to clean your room when he’s awake, whispering so as not to wake him, worrying about waking him with alarm clocks, and so on make Joshua not the best roommate.
So, this past week, Joshua made the jump from our room to the crib in the nursery. That first night, I was sad leaving my little baby in his own crib in his own room – when did he get this big and this old? I was worried he would have a hard time with the adjustment, since he had never slept in a room other than ours. So far, though, he’s been sleeping better in the nursery than he did in our room. He sleeps in later in the morning since we don’t wake him up anymore. His naps are even better in there.
And I am thoroughly enjoying having my space back. I can brush my teeth whenever I want to. My alarm clock only wakes me (and Chad) up. I can talk in my room at any time of the day. Chad is excited that my excuse for not cleaning our room is gone. He sleeps better. I’m not seeing many downsides here. I just have to move his clothes and things in, and the transition will be complete. Hooray!
How did your little one adjust to moving out of your room?

I found it was much harder for me than it was for him. I loved hearing him move and breathe right there in the room with us but I was having all the same issues with it that you were. I resolved my problem by having the baby monitor right there so I can still hear his every move. We are both sleeping better now that we have a little space.
Monitors are wonderful things for calming moms and keeping tabs on little ones
