A Visit From The Fire Department
The good kind of visit, full of fire related education and fun, not the bad kind that involves actual fire and destruction…
Last week was National Fire Prevention Week, and we all got to hang out with some exciting folks as well as a cute talking fire dog named “Sparky.” Ok, it was a person in a dog suit, but the kids were impressed (: And some cried ):
The West Carteret Fire Department came to the daycare in their full fire-fighting regalia — masks, air tanks, boots, the works. They showed the kids everything they wore to be safe, piece by piece and even let some try on their huge helmets.
They also talked about how to make sure your fire detector is working properly, how to make an exit plan in case of emergency, and of course stop drop and roll, which they demonstrated and then had the older kids do it as well.
My class of little ones was pretty quiet until Sparky came in, and then almost all of them started laughing and reaching for him. I only had 2 criers, awww! Isaac was trying to figure out of this dog was for real, as you can see in the photo.
After everyone had gotten a doggy hug or high five, we all went outside for a fire truck demo where they flashed the lights, beeped the siren, and even let some of the big kids get into the truck and sit in the driver’s seat. I kind of wanted to do that, I’ll admit it, but I had my hands full with the babies, maybe next time…
