Baby Flood Survivor
Alright, that title is a bit on the dramatic side, I know (:
It did got a bit scary at times though, I need to say. Let me tell you our story…
The daycare was open but as the day wore on and the rain got worse, I decided I needed to leave early to make sure my precious cargo got home safe. I had Isaac AND Marissa that day because her school was closed, which I think was a very good decision based on the roads.
A friend down the street called as we were leaving informing us that our road was already under a foot of water in some places and the connecting road was closed, so hurry!
And hurry we did, in a safe and orderly fashion of course. I normally drive as slow as your grandma, but that day I took my time like your great-grandma. I was not interested in skidding off the road and ending up in the sinkhole on Hwy 24 or flipping over into a raging river, no thank you.
While driving I was praying, as well as thinking what would I do if the car flooded, our house flooded, or if we needed to evacuate. Of course I am a strong swimmer, but in the case of moving water, it wouldn’t matter, that is a force of nature not to be reckoned with.
Marissa, however, is a very weak swimmer, as well as scared of water above her waist, and Isaac, despite being the water baby he is, would not fare too well either. What is a Mommy duck to do?
I decided that if worse came to worse and the car went under I would bundle Isaac up and tie him sitting up on my shoulders with the towel in the backseat, and I’d have to pull Marissa with one arm over her in the back float position so she wouldn’t tire as quickly while I swam a modified breaststroke.
If we were at the house I would try and free the old canoe from the garage and get to paddling, although I’m not sure it would hold all 4 of us plus the pups. I wonder if they could be like sled dogs but in the water, haha.
Not the best plans, but that’s all I could come up with at the time (:
As we cruised over several spots of 2-3 feet of water on our road, I found myself holding my breath and saying yet another prayer. I even rolled down all 4 windows and made sure the doors were unlocked in case we went under in the car and I lost control of the electrical parts, just in case.
We got home just fine, and the house was fine as well, thank God, but I was rattled for sure, and might just put a couple life jackets in the back of my “boat” the next time there will be torrential rains!
Do you have a flood story to share? Hope everyone fared as well as we did, or better!!!

That is a very scary thing while my story doesn’t have to do with scared of going under with my kids it had to do with food. Our street flooded quick and we were not able to get out or anyone in at the time. I have an extremely low road. However, that was the very day I had planned on going shopping being low on some of the most important of things like milk and bread and such. It was a very scary thought since I had no clue when they rain would end. Everyone was saying something different it seemed. While things where getting extremely low I was lucky in the next day there was a block when it hadn’t rained and the water went down so we were able to get out. It did flood back and worse that night but me and my beautiful girls where in a safer place.
Sarah I am so glad that you and your family made it trough the flooding safely! Being without food is definitely a scary thought indeed, and as much as my husband likes to joke about surviving on wild mushrooms and raccoons in case of emergency, I’d rather not go that route, haha (:
