The End of Co-Sleeping, Part 2
Get up to speed and read Part 1 here.
While in California I talked with my sister’s friend who also co-slept with both of her children. I wanted to learn as much as I could from someone who had been through co-sleeping to crib sleeping. Unfortunately for me the main tactic they found most effective was having her husband go in and soothe the crying child. With Garrett gone that isn’t an option for me.
So now am I supposed to wait until Garrett gets home to sleep train Nora?
On my way back to NC I stopped off in Fort Lee, VA to visit my girlfriend, Denise, who apparently co-slept with her first daughter. Denise’s daughter slept in her bed until she was 3 years-old. Denise said it was a really tough struggle because at that point Kayla could climb down from the bed herself and go and get in her mother’s bed. Denise said the first three days were the worst and then it would get easier. I also learned that Denise had taught Kayla to sleep in her own room without the help of a husband –proving it is possible to do it on your own!
After listening to Denise’s experience I decided I probably should teach Nora sleep in her bed sooner rather than later. Talking with Denise began to booster my convidence and on the seven hour drive back home I went through my phone book and called every single person I could think of to get their feedback and develop a plan of action in my head.
What words of wisdom would you share with a friend who was teaching their child to sleep?
Stay tuned for part 3, later this week!
