Parent’s Checklist For Hurricane Evacuation
Hurricane season is upon us and with all kinds of crazy storms headed our way, including Earl, I realized that it’s time to take out my checklist and make sure I’m prepared if a hurricane actually hits our area. The thought of having to evacuate is a little scary. Even more frightening is thinking about what could possibly happen to our little town if a hurricane passed through, and how it might change our lives.
Going over my checklist, some things were pretty obvious like stocking up on plenty of water, non-perishable food items, batteries and medication. But I started thinking about all the things I would need for Serophina and Saioa in case we had to suddenly leave our home because of hurricane.
Here’s my checklist for Kids and Babies.
For Babies:
1. Plenty of diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream
2. Blankets and cold/warm weather clothing
3. Infant Tylenol and thermometer
4. Powder formula, bottles and bottled water
5. Teethers, toys and pacifiers
6. Pack N Play
7. Baby Bjorn
8. Saline nose drops and aspirator
For Kids:
1. Clothes, underwear and sweaters/jackets
2. Portable DVD players and movies
3. Books, coloring books, crayons or other toys
4. Portable potty (I guess not everyone uses these, but I’ve kept one in my car every since
Serophina was potty trained. Keeps them from having to use yucky public restrooms!)
5. Hand sanitizer, travel size Lysol spray, band aids and Neosporin
6. Children’s Tylenol (or any kind of pain and fever reducer)
7. Sleeping bag. If there’s room in the car I would take this because it’ll make wherever we end up sleeping a fun experience for Serophina.
8. Favorite stuffed animal
What you add to your kids evacuation list? Are you ready for a possible hurricane?

Mamta, thank you for sharing these very useful and timely tips. Its always great for parents to plan in advance for difficult or emergency situations. In addition to having a checklist, parents should have a plan for emergencies, a Family Disaster Plan. You can find some good tips here: http://momtalk.onslow.org/forum/topics/hurricane-preparedness
