From Bassinet to Crib
When Saioa was three months old I was supposed to move her out of the bassinet next to our bed, into a crib in her own room. That day never happened. At her four month checkup her Pediatrician kindly reminded me that in order to start good sleep habits early, she should probably move into her own crib. Breastfed babies can smell their mother’s milk and if you’re trying to get them to sleep through the night, they might be less likely to wake up if they can’t smell their mother. I remember the lactation consultant telling me the same thing; she even suggested moving the bassinet to Kevin’s side of the bed.
I never did any of those things even though I had intended too. The problem being that I like having my sweet little baby right next to me at night. I like being able to just look at her little face any time and know she’s okay.
Now, she’s five and a half months old and I have no choice but to move her out of the bassinet because she’s outgrown it! It’s no longer safe for her to be in there because she’s too mobile now and she can put her little feet on top of the edge!
This past weekend I begrudgingly sent Kevin to the hardware store so that he could buy the screws to put her crib together. All this time it’s been sitting unassembled, in her unoccupied room, but now we have no choice but to put it together.
What’s wrong with me?! I know I can’t keep Saioa at my bedside forever, but sending her to a whole different room at night just feels like I’m sending her out in the woods.
I’ll let you know how it goes, although I’m dreading our first night apart. This transition wasn’t as drastic with Serophina because in our previous house, her room was right next to ours, so it didn’t seem so bad. Saioa’s room is on the opposite side of the house from our room, so I just feel like she’ll be too far away!
I’m so sad to send my baby away to a crib, even though I know it’ll be fine once we actually do it.
How did you feel about transitioning your baby to his/her own room?
