Breanna Sykes

Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

First Night in the Crib

Why was I so afraid of this?

Last week I wrote about how I was going to be moving Saioa from her bassinet and into her crib. I’m happy to report that she did absolutely wonderfully sleeping in her crib!

I definitely feel like I was making it out to be way worse than what it was.

That first night I was sure to stick with her nighttime routine. We gave her a nice, long, warm bath, then baby massage, nighttime feeding and put her down in her crib. She didn’t even flinch! I was afraid she might not know what to do with herself with all that new space and but she had no idea.

I checked on her what seemed like every five minutes until I went to bed. It was fun to see her moving around in there in her sleep. She woke up once during the night and of course I jumped up out of bed and was more than happy to go in there and nurse her. When I put her back down I was still amazed that she didn’t fuss at all and just went right back to sleep.

That morning she woke up happy as a clam and that’s how it’s been ever since!

Some people may be wondering what the big deal is, but to me it’s such a relief because of our experience with our first one. When we moved Serophina into a crib, she knew the difference and was NOT happy about it! So I guess I was expecting the same with Saioa and maybe that’s why I was putting it off as long as possible.

Thankfully, it couldn’t have been easier; it was almost to good to be true!

How have your kids done when you moved them to a bigger bed?

Our family has had mixed reactions like yours. Joshua transitioned fabulously from his swing to his crib, while Emily has yet to do consistently well sleeping in her big girl bed. Every kid is certainly different!

That is so true, every child is different! It’s been almost a year that Serophina has really been sleeping well in her big girl bed. Before that it wasn’t unusual for her to wake up once or twice during the night and come into our bed. Then we’d have to do the whole song and dance… take her back to her bed, lay down with her, quietly sneak out when she fell asleep, only to have her back in our bed an hour later.
Sometimes it takes a while, but it’s really nice when they finally come around!
