Breanna Sykes

Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

Big Bad Bug Eye

What’s worse than a bunch of itchy red bumps on your baby’s delicate skin?

A new bunch of itchy red bumps on your baby’s delicate skin again, especially a huge one right under his eye!

I know I have complained before about the killer mosquitoes in MD and how they enjoy snacking on poor little Isaac, but now he looks like he got quite the beating in the face.  He got stung right under his left eye and the whole area has turned red and is swollen so much that he is squinting on that side.

Baby Quasimodo

It’s the saddest thing I have seen lately, and I feel like a bad mom because I knew about the bugs from last time and did spray some skin so soft (thanks Kelly!) but didn’t do his face because a) I did not want anything sprayed near his eyes, nose, or mouth and b) I assumed I’d see those mean old blood-suckers if they got near his face.

Nope.

I think the one that got Isaac on the face was one of the sneaky and invisible variety, because I was holding him and didn’t see a thing!

I had some anti-itch cream, as well as some gel to make the swelling go down in bites, but I did not trust either so close to my baby’s eye, so I went on another hunt for a cure, this time for some baby benadryl.  Having a hard time finding such any product, I asked the pharmacist and she replied that there was no such thing.  What?  That can’t be true…

She recommended regular children’s benadryl, which sounded possible until I read on the label “for ages 6+.”  I didn’t like the sound of that even though the helpful pharmacist assured me it was fine and gave me the right dosage for Isaac’s weight and age.  Yeah right lady, he is 13 months!

Hmmm…paranoid new mom that I am, I decided to call my pediatrician and get the official ok from her.  It seems that the pharmacist was telling the truth, according to the doc, so Isaac got to slurp some bubble-gum flavored children’s benadryl and within 20 minutes he was asleep and the swelling was down, whew!

Is there really no such thing as baby benadryl?  I wonder why not…there should be so people like me have one less thing to freak out about!  What do you do when your child swells up?

I was very apprehensive about giving Sayle children’s benadryl too, but my pediatrician said the same thing. I’m not sure why there isn’t an infant’s version of it, but there needs to be!
I can’t believe that bug bite, it looked bad enough the day I saw it, that little mosquito (or should I say eagle) sure got him good!

Glad I am not the only paranoid—ahem, I mean “super-safe” mom out there (:
Yeah Isaac seems to attract the most vicious mosquitoes out there for some reason…perhaps it was an eagle!
