Please Say Mommy?! PLEASE???
Sayle is a very vocal child who has lots to say about…well everything. He perfected the art of babbling when he was a few months old. He babbled to his toys, the dogs, his hands, basically everything. As his babbling became more pronounced (if there is such a thing as pronounced babbling) I was hopeful I would hear the magical word that all new mothers long to hear; I was eagerly waiting to hear “ma-ma.”
Sayle’s first word was da-da, although he didn’t really associate da-da with daddy. My husband’s eyes lit up with pride every time he heard da-da and boasted how he was obviously Sayle’s favorite parent since he said da-da before momma. Whatever.
Even though I tried relentlessly to get Sayle to say ma-ma, his second word was doggie. We were walking through the house and Foster was following us and Sayle busted out with “doggie.” He said doggie for a while, but I haven’t heard him say it in months so I’m not quite sure if I can count that as one of his words or not.
His next words were ball and goal, thanks to my husband’s obsession with soccer. By the time these words rolled around, I was practicing ma-ma with him daily. Say mommy! Sayle, can you say mommy? Ma-ma? Sayle, who am I?
Sayle has since added hi, bye-bye, uh-oh, ah-sie (horsie) and my personal two favorites- Moe and Co-co, for Elmo and Cookie Monster to his vocabulary.
Somehow da-da, doggie, ball, goal, and Sesame Street characters rank higher on the importance scale than ma-ma. I am, after all, just the person who brought him into this world and cares for him majority of the time, so he doesn’t really need to know my name.
I thought I heard him say mommy a few times, but it was more of a ma-may with an Italian accent, or ma-ma-ma-ma-ma. Even though he doesn’t say ma-ma, he is able to pick me out in pictures, so that counts for something, right?
I am still waiting to hear those magical words, but for now I will answer to crying, loud squeals, and I will come running when I hear a crash. I know those noises mean mommy too!
When did your child say mommy? What words does your child say?

Beau is saying mama, but not mommy. I finally graduated from Bob to mama. If it makes you feel any better, Beau said “goat” before mama! Tubes has made all the difference in the world at this house. His vocabulary has exploded since then, but you can’t get him to repeat anything if you ask him to.
Thanks Cheryl, the “Bob” comment made me laugh. I have to ask-where did Beau get goat from??
Ditto. The girls say “mum mum” clear as day but not mommy. I’m ranked lower than a rice cracker. Audrey referred to me as “no da-eee” (not daddy) when I asked her who I was. Nice.
Brady said “haha” for months before saying “mama” he has yet to say “dada” and it makes Ben MAD!
I know how you feel. When my daughter started going to daycare,I was so excited to drive to pick her up bc i had visions of her running to me and saying “mommy”. But NOOO, when I walked in the room, she turned and looked at me and said “daddy”.. and it was all i could do not to cry. Now she is a chatterbox and no matter who picks her up in the afternoon she says “Im so glad to see you”… that makes the heart melt.. When you least expect it, sayle will say mommy and your heart will melt too!
He has an animal farm at home and one of the plastic toys is a goat. We also take him to Mike’s Farm and there are PLENTY of goats there!
Rylee said “mama” first. Then after about 5 times of saying it he reverted the ever popular “dada”. Now he says “mommy, peas (please), daddy, mimi, pa, papa, mama, bye, hey, no, uh huh, E (ethan), ball, boo, pee pie, beep beep, pieces, eyes, bee bees (boobies)…don’t ask, and there are a few others that I really can’t spell. He has a large vocabulary. But my favorites are when he screams mommy and I say “what baby” and he says “baby”. And the greatest is when he says “pieces” which means I love you to pieces.
