Breanna Sykes

Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

A train birthday party

Owen's first train themed birthday party

We went to a friend’s birthday party today.  Their son just turned three years old and I caught a glimpse into Owen’s future birthday parties.  The birthday was train themed with Thomas the Tank Engine being the dominant figure throughout the room.  I am amazed how much little boys gravitate to Thomas, however I remember being that age and being mildly obsessed with Snoopy and Charlie Brown.  When we entered the room, we were immediately greeted with the shrieks of little boys and girls and the noise of trains barreling around the toy tracks; a few of the little kids were gleefully blowing train whistles, adding to the noise level.  I was a little worried about it being too noisy for Owen, but once again Owen was a model three month old.

My wife passed Owen off to a few of our friends as we loaded up our plates with food.  A couple of things amazed me:

  • One, the food choices were pretty interesting.  Not only did they offer bean dip, Swedish meatballs and other sorts of adult food, but there was also kid’s food like macaroni and cheese, pre-cut PBJ sandwiches, and hot dogs wrapped in croissants.
  • Two, I was amazed at how well Owen was doing being passed around.  The noise from the kids and trains were fairly loud and the kids running rampant throughout the room was a lot to take in, to say nothing of having unfamiliar people holding him.  But Owen seemed content being shuffled from person to person and seemed to like the hustle and bustle of the birthday party.

All in all, it was another successful outing with Owen and it got me thinking about his future birthday parties.  Though I am warming to Thomas the Tank Engine, I’m thinking that our birthday parties will be a little quieter.  Not sure if I have much say with the noise level, but I can hope, can’t I?

How have you celebrated your son’s/daughter’s birthday party?
