An End to Chaotic Dinnertime
In my house, when the needle on the clock hit’s 5, that’s when my day starts to accelerate. So begins the steadfast ritual of making dinner, feeding dinner, cleaning up dinner, bathing of the babes, jammies, teeth brushing, book and finally, bed. In between all that is a scheduled workout at 5:30pm, 3 days a week, power walking on Monday nights at 7pm, pilates class on Tuesday at 5:30pm and at the end of every evening when all is said and done, the dog still needs to be taken for a walk.
Why everything must take place in the evening, I don’t know. But I’ve realized that because so many things are happening between 5pm and 8pm, I’m spending less and less time preparing a good meal for my family. Instead it’s become a race to get something edible on the dinner table so we can move on to the next thing. A lot of times we’re not even sitting down and eating together because evening time is also when the baby decides to get fussy so one of us is either holding her, bathing her or rocking her while the other one sits and eats with Serophina.
I’ve decided I want to put an end to the 5 o’clock frenzy and put more planning and preparation into weeknight dinners, sit down as a family and enjoy a meal together. We used to do that but somewhere along the way it changed…. I’m not exactly sure when. Every member of my family loves to cook and loves to eat. I want to take advantage of that and create more happy memories in the kitchen. Memories that Serophina can look back on fondly and one day re-create with her own children. If that means I have to start cooking dinner at 2 and make everyone eat at 4, so be it. They’re either going to hate me for it or love me. Either way, there will definitely be some memories to talk about!!
