Breanna Sykes

Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

The Dog Cashes In-Video Post

I have blogged about Sayle’s furry BFF before, but if you don’t remember, our miniature pinscher Foster is truly Sayle’s buddy.  When we brought Sayle home from the hospital, Foster turned into Baby Guard Dog and that still holds true a year later.  Foster brings Sayle his ball and Sayle throws it for him.  They play tug of war, and the game gets pretty intense until Foster pulls Sayle over.  Foster allows Sayle to pull up on him and yank his fur, ears, and legs and Foster tolerates Sayle’s “petting” which is really slapping with love.  Also, Foster serves as my ears in the early morning when I don’t respond to Sayle’s cries fast enough.  If Sayle starts to fuss and I don’t immediately jump up to get him, Foster paces up and down the bed, annoying me just enough to make me get up.  Foster continues to keep our

Throw-Up Initiation

Baby barf…no big deal, right? We’ve all been through it, from the little spit up on the shoulder after a meal to the projectile vomit from across the room. Moms are used to this and take it in stride most of the time, but what about dads? My husband was already irritated about being peed all over yesterday, so on Sunday he made sure to avoid Isaac when he was being bathed or playing in the pool or being changed…basically when our son was diaper-free Chris was was nowhere to be found. Later I discovered he was hiding out in the garage with a guitar, so now I know where to look next time I need him, haha (: By early evening Chris was in baby boy withdrawal, so he decided to bravely venture back into the land of Isaacopolis, where the possibility of being sprinkled on or worse was

What’s Your Return Policy?

For the last few months of my pregnancy, my 3-year-old would often kiss or hug my belly, expressing her love for her baby sister that was soon to come. We explained to her what would happen the day the baby came and how our lives would be different from that point on. She seemed receptive and we didn’t anticipate any major problems. After months of waiting, the big day finally came and the new baby was here. Serophina was at school that morning and her Dad picked her up in the afternoon and brought her to see her new baby sister. We couldn’t wait to see her reaction. We had all the cameras poised and ready to document the big moment. To our surprise, not only was she not impressed but she didn’t seem to like the baby at all. From a safe distance, she stared at me holding this

The Many Faces of Isaak

My Isaak is quite the sneaky rat meat.  He likes to find things that he isn’t supposed to have, and then sees if he can get away with having them.  He uses his dashing grin and his debonair smile to hypnotize me into thinking he’s not doing something naughty.  I would have to give him the gold for his facial expressions.  Sometimes I wonder if even HE knows how he makes certain faces.  I love that he can change his face in a matter of seconds to win his case.  I think he takes after his dad and may have a future in the legal field one day!  The best part is, it’s not only ME who usually falls for his trickery, it’s ALL of his siblings, and even his DAD who usually is the strong hand in the family.  Take for instance this random coke he found outside. “Hello

Working Mom Woes-Part I

When the director of my program allowed me to bring Sayle to work with me, I was ecstatic.  I was given the opportunity to have the best of both worlds; I could keep my baby close and maintain my career.  It was the perfect setup…well, for the first eleven months.  I eventually needed to get back out in the community and attend meetings, which was difficult with a five month old.  He was fine when he was younger, he just sat there looking around or slept, but he had started becoming very vocal.  He was adorably distracting to all professionals during meetings, and while everyone loved him, I didn’t feel it was appropriate for me to bring him to my meetings anymore.   I had no other choice than to start taking him to a babysitter one or two days a week for a few hours and I knew the perfect

The Kitchen is Closed

I know I’ve told you all before how much I Love my Little Co-Sleeper. I don’t believe I’ve told you how much my little co-sleeper eats at night. Nora, at 11 months, is still being breastfed on demand. She has been weaning herself during the day and now only breastfeeds twice –when she goes down for her naps. She, however, has increased her night time feedings. I didn’t do anything about it for a while because she was sick or teething and I figured her body knew what it needed better than I. Well, now she is not sick and not teething and I honestly think that she is eating out of habit and convenience rather than need. So the other week I decided that between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., the kitchen is closed. I told this to Nora before she went to bed. Not
