Breanna Sykes

Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

Brynn Reese

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

Isaac The Scavenger

I have noticed at daycare Isaac portrays a certain notorious member of the food chain:  the scavenger!

Just like a hyena or vulture on the nature shows, he lurks on the African savanna among the high grass…and by “savanna” I mean the baby dining room and by “high grass” I mean stuffed animals and toys, of course.

When the other babies are up in their high chairs eating their snacks, Isaac begins to stalk them based on what is on the menu. The usual fare of Puffs and Lil’ Crunchies are somewhat interesting to him, but the big winners are things he knows he cannot have yet, such as cookies, grapes, and mac n’ cheese.457-vultures-kill

Isaac keeps his eyes on the prize, or prizes depending on the snack selection, and lays in wait.  Sometimes he hides in one of the baby tunnels or behind a baby bike, and other times he just sits in the middle of the floor silently, not making a sound or moving a muscle.  Just watching…and waiting.

At this point my little guy is more like a predator than a scavenger with all the recon and ninja moves, but wait, he soon goes back into scavenger mode.

The second anything that looks edible to him hits the floor, the race is on!  Isaac army crawls as fast as he possibly can to attack the piece of food on the floor and stuff it in his mouth before anyone notices what he is up to.

Luckily the majority of the time myself or another teacher will catch him before he is in full scale snack attack, but occasionally he is too wily and quick and manages to sneak something before he is caught.

This of course means I need to scoop a pinkie in his mouth and fish out whatever today’s catch is, ew, a little gross, I know, but I’d rather my baby not choke (:

FYI:  After a couple days of being the class scavenger, I decided that even though Isaac was not eating as many meals/snacks as the other babies because he is still being breastfed a lot, he should be up in a high chair when they are regardless to avoid any future sneaky snack attacks.

Is your baby a scavenger?
