Allergic To…
I LOVE strawberries. I could eat them all day long, no joke. They may very well be the greatest fruit ever “invented!”
We journeyed to a local farmer’s market last weekend for a fun, food-filled adventure, and I was in strawberry heaven! All fresh and organic and delicious!
After sampling one to make sure it was yummy (ha ha yeah right it was just because I couldn’t resist any longer!) I offered a beautiful red fruit to Isaac, who was eyeballing them hungrily.

Gimme that strawberry!
He chowed down! I thought at first my son might want to lick it or grab it, but no, he just stuffed the whole thing in his mouth like it was nothing.
The look on his face was priceless; it was as if Isaac’s tongue could not decide whether this was a good taste and texture combo or a bad one, but in the end he decided in favor of the wondrous strawberry.
I bought a big container of lusciousness and strolled through the rest of the market checking out all the good stuff and feasting on strawberries. Yes, I did share with the little guy too! His face was soon covered in red juice!
After about an hour we headed home, loaded down with fruits and veggies that were actually less expensive than at the grocery store. Ahhh… saving money plus eating healthy equals happy Sarah.
When we got back to the house I saw that Isaac’s face was still pretty red, which I thought was odd since I had cleaned him up when we left the market. Upon closer inspection I noticed that he had red blotchy spots all over his face and when I took his clothes off it was all over his little body, yikes!
Fortunately Isaac was not fussy or itchy, just rashy. I checked the temperature and it was normal (insert sigh of relief after last week’s urgent care visit).
I called the off hours pediatrician and when I explained we had eaten strawberries earlier she said that many babies who eat them have an allergic reaction at first. Apparently that is why some doctors advise not to feed babies certain things before a year, such as eggs, fish, and of course the infamous strawberries.
She said that if the rash did not disappear after 24 hours of eating the berries or if he developed any other symptoms such as fever, vomiting, etc. to bring him in, but for now it was fine to wait the rash out.
Sadly I guess I will have to eat my tasty strawberries when Isaac is napping for now…
Did your baby have an allergic reaction to a certain type of food? What happened?

I guess I should have told you about that while I was watching you feed Issac strawberries! Honey, peanuts and wieners are a no no too until your baby is at least one year old. I’m glad it was only a rash.
Oh well, you live and you learn, right? Gotta love those farmer’s market strawberries (:
