Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

The Poster Child for Floss

Easter 2010 153

Nora has developed a new obsession: oral hygiene. Brushing teeth is of course a part of Nora’s bedtime routine and has been ever since her first tooth. She gets her teeth brushed right after I change her into her pajamas and before I read her a story. In the beginning she loved it when we held her and rubbed her teeth and gums with the finger toothbrush. By the time we moved up to the regular tooth brush she was a professional. She was so good when I brushed her teeth that I decided to reward her and let her have a turn after I brushed her teeth. Boy was that a mistake! Now SHE wants to be the ONLY one to brush HER teeth. She screams and cries and wiggles and jiggles if I try to brush her teeth.

Oh boy.

I’ve had to force the issue (and brush her teeth anyway) but I don’t think this is going to make her love brushing her teeth. Lately I have been letting her chew on the toothbrush while keeping my fingers crossed that she is doing a good job.

But what does Nora continue to love? Flossing. She LOVES to have me floss her teeth. And after I’m done she wants to floss her teeth again. She gets excited if she sees a floss canister. We can’t leave them laying around anymore because not only does she steal them; she has also learned how to open them (entirely open them), remove the little ball of floss and unwind the whole thing.

I’m excited that she loves flossing her teeth but I need some new ideas. How can I get her to let ME brush her teeth. Do you have any ideas to share?

    Jessica,
Come to my house at 6:30pm, I’ll have Nora do a floss demonstration ;) .

    Sarah,
What a cute picture! Our children are adorable.

    Carrie,
The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree, huh? I was going to put something in the blog about someone stealing Nora’s floss but ended up leaving it out. You should take the picture of Nora flossing (I can send one to you too) and think of a catchy phrase and print/frame it for your dad’s office as a father’s day present. He’d love it! …dentists totally dig people who floss :) .

    Kelly
