Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

Grocery Store Terrors

izey ice cream in cart[2]

Am I the only one who DREADS going to the grocery store if I have to take my kids?  I remember being a kid and going with my mom to the grocery store and she always made the event so fun for everyone.  I don’t really remember her being stressed, or dripping with sweat, or freaking out over what was put where in the cart.  Why am I like this?!

I usually try to get to the grocery store on Saturday mornings when Austin is home and can stay with all the kids.  I enjoy the peace and quiet when I shop alone.  I can take my time.  I can browse.

BUT, on the rare occasion I end up having to take one, two or FIVE of my children with me and when that happens,

 I. GO. INSANE.

I feel like I’m on a timer because I know Isaak and August will only handle being TOLD what to do and where to sit for only so long.  My big kids are constantly nagging me for things they want me to buy that AREN’T on my list (and believe me, Dave Ramsey is super strict about following a list).  I have to keep barking at them to stop asking for things the entire time.

Then, there’s Isaak, who feels the need to have ONE SINGLE BITE of every item I put into my cart.  He tries to open every box, he bites through the plastic around the hot dogs, and he even starts picking strawberries out of the container.

When all of this happens, I begin to sweat like a mad woman and usually end up caving in to buy the kids one of those tiny Ben and Jerry ice creams to entertain them while I try to hurry and finish the dreaded job.

Thankfully, this is only on a rare occasion, but I have to BEGIN to get used to this madness because before long, my hubby will be deployed and I’ll have no choice but to drag all the chickens with me EVERY TIME.

This makes me sweat just thinking about it.. There is always a time crunch when I have to take kids with me, you’re brave to give them icecream cuz that would worry me about melting and getting everywhere , ha.. I totally feel like you do, make sure to ask for help when your hubby deploys so you don’t have to add any more stress then needed..:)

i know. i really need to work on askin for help. i HATE doing that more than anything. i’d rather just make myself go insane which isn’t healthy for a mom in charge of the lives of 5 kids. yikes.

Jessica, I LOVE this blog! This is hilarious, not because you are going insane, but because I can totally picture all of this happening.
I hate the grocery store in general, I would rather clean the whole house than go grocery shopping. I get stressed when I have only ONE child having a fit in the cart, I cannot even imagine five children with me in the grocery store, along with my attitude of having to be there in the first place.
Can you keep the older kids on task by letting them carry the list and “helping” you find exactly what you are looking for?
I agree with asking for help on that one. Handling five kids at home is one thing, handling five kids while shopping for a family of seven is another.
On another note-high five to you, I couldn’t do it!!

brooke! oh my gosh. ok this is exactly what my mom had US do when we were kids. she would divide the list in two parts for me and my big sister to get certain items and have my little sister in the cart with her.

WHY CAN’T I HAVE THAT SAME PATIENCE?!?!?!?!
