Breanna Sykes

Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

When I lived in DC I always wanted to be a part of a running group. I had heard from friends that running groups were the way to go. You make friends, and improve your running and health all at the same time.

I thought after having Nora that I would never be able to achieve my goal of being in a running group. I had never seen a running group –all pushing baby strollers. When Stephanie Geraghty moved to Jacksonville, NC she hadn’t seen a running group pushing baby strollers either. So she started her own. She started a running group for military moms called Stroller Warriors which I am now proudly a part of.

We meet up at local parks on weekdays at 9:30am, do a quick warm up and then run for 30-40 minutes. We then do circuit training while our children play on playground equipment. We are getting T-shirts made and will participate in our first race, the MARSOC Mud Run, on Easter weekend. Stephanie does a great job of researching and keeping everyone up to date on races available in the Jacksonville, NC area. I know I’m not ‘in it to win it’ with races. I just enjoy hanging out with friends while getting a good workout.

Running with other women has really helped me to get a great workout! I push myself much further than I would if I were running alone. Plus, running with company keeps my mind from going negative places. To top it all off I’ve made new friends and have had play dates with them outside of stroller warriors. Plus Stroller Warriors is really going to help me get in shape for my goal while Garrett is deployed: run the Marine Corps Marathon.

Thanks Sheri! Everyone IS really nice in Stroller Warriors! It’s one of the best clubs I’ve joined and I’ve already decided I’m going to take it with me when I PCS. It’s a really great way to meet new people, make friends and get in a good workout at the same time! There is also an article about us in the Jacksonville Daily News if you needed more information for your blog. Also feel free to link my blog to your blog. Hope to see you on Tuesday!
