Breanna Sykes

Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

Sayle’s First Birthday Saga

I have been Birthday Crazy for the entire month of March!  I bought, planned, and Googled myself silly with 1st birthday stuff since everything had to be PERFECT for Sayle’s big celebration.  I have had grandiose ideas in my head for the past 365 days and my mission was to put all these ideas into birthday-reality.  In the weeks leading up to Sayle’s party, I tore up Onslow and Carteret County looking for the perfect birthday gear.

An internet friendly version of the invite

An internet friendly version of the invite

My first task was his party invitation. I didn’t want to do a written invitation; I wanted an invite made specifically for Sayle.  I googled high and low for a perfect 1st birthday invite but couldn’t find one I liked.  There are a million invitations for a child’s birthday party, but not many for a baby’s first birthday.  Frustrated, I declared Google useless and decided to take the old school route by going to an actual store! There, I found exactly what I was looking for; a blue and white invitation that had the most adorable little monkey on it.

My joy was short-lived when I realized that even though I had the perfect invite for my perfect child, I didn’t have the perfect wording for the perfect invitation.  I spent countless hours googling 1st birthday poems, but shockingly I couldn’t find one that I liked.  Even though my words have been mistaken for Shakespeare before, I couldn’t even come up with the perfect wording for the invite.  I was panicked until a friend of mine gave me a gorgeous picture frame that contained a poem that captured exactly how we felt about Sayle and his first year.  This perfect poem went out on the perfect invitation and I declared Google useless again.

Sayles little cakeI loved the monkey on the invitation so much, I decided to use monkeys as the theme to Sayle’s party.  Do you know how hard it is to find monkey paper products?  I found only one monkey paper product set online and the price was ridiculous.  I visited every party supply store within a 50 mile radius and could not find monkeys!  If you are looking for Sesame Street or Disney characters for your child’s birthday, I can tell you exactly where to get them as that is all I seemed to find!  I had to finally accept the fact that monkeys were not going to rule this party and incorporated adorable baby jungle animals in Sayle’s theme.  I was actually able to purchase cups, big and small plates, napkins, a banner, decorations, and Sayle’s party hat for less than what I would have paid for the monkey set online.  Again Google  proved useless.

Birthday CakeThe easiest part of this party was the cake.  I get all my big cakes from Kathy Canby and her cakes are heaven.  She bakes all of the cakes herself and she sincerely wants your cake to be perfect.  I sent her a copy of the invitation and she was able to make the cake look exactly like it!  If you’re going to Google anything for your child’s party, then Google her.

I have a true appreciation for what goes into a child’s first birthday party.  Even though I have had 365 days for grandiose ideas, putting them into play was not easy; actually it was rather stressful!

Stay tuned for the rest of Sayle’s 1st birthday saga!
