Breanna Sykes

Hey there! I never really know how to introduce myself properly but here it goes. I am originally from New York but when my husband joined the Marine Corps we had to move to Jacksonville, NC. I absolutely love the south. The people are nicer, the weather is better, and it's a great place to raise a family. Which is why I'm here. My husband and I have a beautiful daughter Abigail Yvonne. He has been deployed for her first year but will be coming home shortly. It will be an interesting transition that I look forward to sharing with you! My life might not be all that interesting but being a mom sure is! Follow my blogs and see what I'm talking about.

I grew up in here in North Carolina and attended Duke for my undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for my master’s degrees. I moved up north to Boston after completing school and worked there for five years as an inner-city middle and high school history teacher. While in Boston, I met my husband, Chad, who was there for school, and we were married the summer of 2004. 2007 was a big year for us – we welcomed our son, Nathan, Chad finished school, and we moved to Jacksonville for a great job opportunity for Chad. Nineteen months after Nathan was born, our daughter, Emily, joined our family. Twenty-two months later, Joshua came along. I’m now a stay-at-home mom to my little brood, having “retired” from teaching after Nathan’s arrival. When I’m not busy feeding, cleaning, dressing, and keeping up with Nathan, Emily, Joshua, and their dad, I enjoy reading, quilting, and going to the beach. I also still cheer for my beloved Blue Devils whenever the opportunity arises and thoroughly enjoyed last season’s national championship. Go Duke! Life can be a little busy around here (hello – three kids under the age of four!), but I’m looking forward to sharing life with three active little ones with you.

What is WIC?

If you don’t know, check this out! WIC stands for “women, infants and children,” and it is a federal program designed to provide food to low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children until the age of five. Besides free food, this program also provides nutritional information, breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals for health care.  Their website says they also provide infant formula, but I cannot personally vouch for that as I have not utilized that option. WIC has been so helpful for our family, even when I was pregnant.  The ladies there were so sweet and supportive!  They even arranged for me to borrow a nice hospital grade double breast pump, which was a God send! Now not only do I get vouchers for healthy food such as milk, cereal, juice and cheese, but also Isaac gets little check-ups and baby food now that he is on

Car Seat Woes Resolved Via Britax

When I was shopping for Sayle’s infant carrier I spent hours researching and reading reviews in order to buy the perfect one for our precious newborn.  It had to be safe and easy for me to handle as a new mom.  We finally chose the Chico travel system and I loved it! Unfortunately, babies gain weight and grow, making safe carriers very unsafe as they approach the weight limit.  As Sayle started putting more weight on, I knew the easy days of the infant carrier were coming to an end.  I had become quite spoiled by the convenience of the carrier; I could just pop him and out of the car and in and out of the stroller like a pro.  Click and go!  I felt very over whelmed by all the car seats on the market and honestly some of them do not even look safe, much less comfortable!

Little Eyes Are Watching (Video)

I know that little kids learn by example and actions speak louder than words. I’ve heard those phrases more times than I can count but I never really stopped to think about it. That is until little Nora surprised me by doing this… (watch the video and find out what I’m talking about).

Isaac Heart Marissa and Likewise

Sarah?  Is Isaac my real brother?  I was told that since we don’t have the same mom that we aren’t really related and he is not really my brother.” Wow, my stepdaughter asks some loaded questions!  When I first heard this one it hurt my heart that Marissa might not love Isaac as a “real” sibling just because I am not her birth mother.  Then I realized that there was no truth to that; and that she loves my son regardless of what others might tell her.  Marissa entertains him by singing, making funny faces, and playing peek-a-boo, and she always wants to hold him, and Isaac laughs at anything she does and always wants to grab her blond hair; they are darling together (: Marissa has always been very independent and strong, even through her dad’s messy divorce and custody battle.  She loves her mom and dad despite what

Dancing KING

I have a bona-fide dancer in my family, my Isaak.  He LOVES to rock out to anything, everything, anywhere, and anytime.  I love it.  This is when we went to a restaurant this weekend and were seated in the waiting room as well as our dancing fun on the way home.  He didn’t even care that everyone was watching him at the restaurant.  I love that!  PS…His cheeks are rosy because he is DEAD tired.  He decided to skip his nap that day and play in his bed for 2 hours instead.  PSS..I apologize for the crying baby in the first half of the video.  That’s not mine.  Just kidding, it is. *wink*

Working Nine To Five…With A Baby

I am exceptionally lucky to work for a company that is family based and to have a supervisor who allowed me the privilege of bringing Sayle with me to work.  I returned to the office after taking one month of maternity leave, but the transition back to the office was easy since I didn’t have the anxiety of putting Sayle in daycare early.  I am also fortunate to have co-workers who were eagerly awaiting his arrival my entire pregnancy.  They love Sayle and jumped at the chance to hold, feed, play, and rock him.  They have served as a valuable support for me and I doubt I would have been able to return to work easily without them.     Balancing work and Sayle was difficult initially because I was a rookie mom.  I was trying to write reports, see my families, work with my clients, along with figuring out a new
