I have never been a naptime nazi. I have allowed Nora to make and set her own schedule. This worked beautifully up until Nora was about 9 months old. Her schedule changed. I diligently paid close attention to Nora to see what schedule would emerge (like last time) but she couldn’t seem to make up her mind. Some days she would have one nap. Some days she would have three. Nora is an incredibly adaptable child and I enjoyed the new flexibility in our schedule. I would take her wherever I wanted and work her naps around what I was doing. How much she slept varied day by day. Now, those of you who don’t know me well should know that my motto in life has always been “Sleep is over-rated,” or “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” It was such an intricate theme in how I functioned (with work and

Can you remember some of your fondest memories with your Mom, Grandma or an adult figure in your life? Some of my happiest memories are most definitely cooking with my Mom and having my Grandma teach me to make fudge. As an adult, I have learned to LOVE cooking. I absolutely feel like heaven when I am in my kitchen cooking something wonderful. I have spent lots of time cooking with my children. My son enjoys cooking, but my four year old daughter LOVES to cook!! Her eyes light up any time I ask her to help me in the kitchen. I know while we are working together in the kitchen that she is so very happy. This picture is the first time she made cinnamon rolls with me and she loved sprinkling the brown sugar on top. She enjoys making food fancy and decorating cookies and pouring ingredients, cracking

Yes folks, my husband is still on his quest to mold his son into some kind of music prodigy. At first it was just guitar player, but now Chris has decided to expand Isaac’s repertoire to piano virtuoso. As with the Baby Guitar Hero blog , I am still crossing my fingers that my little guy inherited the musician gene from Chris instead of the tone deaf gene from me, but still no solid proof for either side as of yet… Anyway, after the recent foray into guitar strumming/gumming, now the focus is piano playing. Chris is a patient teacher still, and it’s pretty amusing to watch him introduce these instruments to the new Rolling Stone magazine cover model/musician. Isaac, as all babies, is inherently curious and feels the need to use all five senses to explore these new toys that make new and exciting sounds. Unfortunately he could not

I have been Birthday Crazy for the entire month of March! I bought, planned, and Googled myself silly with 1st birthday stuff since everything had to be PERFECT for Sayle’s big celebration. I have had grandiose ideas in my head for the past 365 days and my mission was to put all these ideas into birthday-reality. In the weeks leading up to Sayle’s party, I tore up Onslow and Carteret County looking for the perfect birthday gear. My first task was his party invitation. I didn’t want to do a written invitation; I wanted an invite made specifically for Sayle. I googled high and low for a perfect 1st birthday invite but couldn’t find one I liked. There are a million invitations for a child’s birthday party, but not many for a baby’s first birthday. Frustrated, I declared Google useless and decided to take the old school route by going

When I lived in DC I always wanted to be a part of a running group. I had heard from friends that running groups were the way to go. You make friends, and improve your running and health all at the same time. I thought after having Nora that I would never be able to achieve my goal of being in a running group. I had never seen a running group –all pushing baby strollers. When Stephanie Geraghty moved to Jacksonville, NC she hadn’t seen a running group pushing baby strollers either. So she started her own. She started a running group for military moms called Stroller Warriors which I am now proudly a part of. We meet up at local parks on weekdays at 9:30am, do a quick warm up and then run for 30-40 minutes. We then do circuit training while our children play on playground equipment. We are getting T-shirts

I am a HUGE nickname fan, always have been, always will be. I think each of my kids have at LEAST 5-6 nicknames and I rotate calling them different ones all the time which definitely causes a lot of confusion for people who are just getting to know our family. I have never really thought twice about nicknames being an issue, as my kids get older. I just assume that they will eventually outgrow them, as my two older kids have, and move on continuing to go by their full first name. Boy was I wrong! Jeremiah, our middle son, actually goes by the name, ‘Miah’. We’ve called him that since the day we adopted him simply for convenience’s sake. It’s much easier to yell out across the park, “MIAH!!!!”, than it is to scream a four syllable name that will probably get lost in translation being that it’s so
