Laurie Morris

Originally, born in Rochester Minnesota, I was raised in Richmond Virginia, a beautiful city and wonderful place to spend a childhood. I ran off to college, armed with as much common sense as I thought I would ever need and settled in at East Carolina University where I met my soon to be husband, Daniel. We married shortly after graduating and planted ourselves in Raleigh to begin our lives together. Daniel and I knew very early on that we were going to get married. It was meant to be. If I had gotten into my first choice school, I would never have set foot in North Carolina, let alone Greenville. If Daniel didn’t enjoy irritating his father by going to any school but NC State, he never would have found himself waiting for me outside of Econ1200 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are avid Pirates now, sort of as a “thank you” to our alma-mater. We are active Pirate Club members, attend each and every home football game, some away games and have even made it out to the bowl games in recent years. We love ECU for bringing us together. And now we have our own little Pirate as a result! Daniel and I have been married for 7 fantastic years. In September of 2010, we were hit with the most life altering news we could imagine – we were pregnant! This was an incredibly joyous occasion for Daniel. I, however, found myself wrought with anxiety and worry for the new and unknown world I was about to enter and from which I would never return. After meeting Lily, I knew there was no way I could give her to a stranger on my way to work every day. And the decision was made. I have been home caring for Lily since I brought her home from the hospital and I am happier than I could have ever imagined. I have found that, much to my dismay, I was made to be a mother. Even the truly trying times, sleepless nights and colicky months are a drop in the bucket compared to the joy I receive daily from watching my child learn and grow and seeing her smile.

Baby Stomach Virus

Sayle had a pediatrician appointment Monday morning for his second round of the H1N1 shot and flu shot.  We would have had the second round earlier, but we were busy battling ear infections and ridiculous fevers left and right so he could not have the shots.

smileywithchillsandfeverWhen we got there, the waiting room was packed so I had to take the only seat available, next to a woman who did not look like she felt fantastic.  Thankfully we only had to wait about ten minutes before the nurse brought us back.  Sayle was not happy about getting the shots, but I was able to quickly divert his attention with Glow Worm (a must have).  We were out of there in about twenty minutes total and I was ready for the start of a very productive week.

Monday evening Sayle started having watery diarrhea.  Not blow out diarrhea, just liquid that escapes the diaper and goes all over his clothes.  Had I known Monday what I know today I would have put him in quarantine, but I thought perhaps the diarrhea was from the shots.

Sayle went through five outfit changes on Tuesday thanks to the unstoppable water diarrhea.  Could he really have picked something up in the pediatrician’s office when we were only there for twenty minutes?  I knew this watery mess wasn’t from his shots; it had to be a virus.  My thoughts were confirmed at 9 pm when I started violently barfing.  I ended up spending the night on the bathroom floor making hurling noises one would think was appropriate for a zoo and on Wednesday morning every muscle in my body ached from the heaving.  Sayle was sick and I was so sick-my husband was on daddy duty and husband duty!

I feel better but Sayle still hasn’t kicked this virus.  We have put him on Pedialite and crackers, but the diarrhea continues.  He has developed a diaper rash so horrific that when I even try to change his diaper he starts screaming.  I contacted the doctor they informed me this stomach virus can take on different symptoms depending on the person.  Some people will vomit, some will have diarrhea, and some will have both.  They told me this stomach flu has been running rampid through the schools and community!  The doctor said they have even seen a two week old with this virus!

Unfortunately, when you take a child to the pediatrician’s office you run the risk of exposure to viruses and other sicknesses.  I will never take Sayle into the pediatrician’s office on a Monday morning unless he is sick –lesson learned.
